Allied Waste gets Pride Day contract

ELYRIA – Allied Waste will provide trash containers around the county for Saturday`s Lorain County Pride Day, the county commissioners decided Thursday.

Allied had initially quoted the county a price of $16,968 for the containers and was outbid by Cleveland-based Metro Disposal`s bid of $16,170.

After Allied complained about not getting the contract last week, the county allowed the waste hauler, which has a landfill in New Russia Township, to submit a new bid.

That price, $16,044, ended up being the lowest bid, Assistant County Administer Ron Twining told the commissioners Thursday.

Metro was given a chance to lower its bid but declined, he said.

Allied pushed hard for the contract, which it has received for the past several years, even as it urged county officials to cut the fees it pays to the Lorain County Solid Waste Management District to dump trash at the landfill.

Commissioner Lori Kokoski said that while she doesn`t always agree with Allied, she`d rather have local workers getting paid overtime to work Saturday and have a local company get the contract.

“I`m happy that it`s going to a local company,” she said.

Solid Waste Director Dan Billman had initially planned to go with Metro`s bid because Allied`s price was higher. The county allows Lorain County companies to receive contracts even when their bids are up to 3 percent higher than out-of-county companies. The difference in the initial bids was nearly 5 percent.

Allied General Manager Keith Cordesman said earlier this week that the company would be able to distribute the trash containers around the county in plenty of time if it received the contract.
