H.S. Track: Nageotte sets Division I state pole vault record at SWC meet

BROADVIEW HEIGHTS – The North Olmsted boys won their first conference track championship since 1982 and Midpark`s girls won their
first-ever league crown, but Friday`s Southwestern Conference meet belonged to Olmsted Falls pole vaulter Katie Nageotte.
Nageotte set a Division I state record with a vault of 12 feet, 10 inches, topping the  record of 12-9 set by Carrie Kayes of Green in 2006.
Nageotte just missed the overall state record of 13-0, set by Mackenzie Wells of Troy Christian in 2008.
“I can`t even begin to describe it, it`s just honestly the best feeling in the world,” Nageotte said, following three chances at 13-2.
“A lot of times when I get to bigger heights, my mind thinks this is really big. I just try to stay focused and keep my speed up. I was excited to be here. I guess I`m going to try and go for 13, just keep trying to go as high as I can.”
Prior to Nageotte`s record vault, the Westlake Demons got a glimpse of the future with their girls track program.
Freshman Charlotte Tate made an immediate impact in conference competition and brought home two event championships.
“I was nervous at first, but I was really excited when I ended up doing well,” said Tate. “I didn`t really expect it.”
Tate made a strong run in the girls 1,600 meters, finishing more than eight seconds ahead of fellow freshman Katy Link of Avon Lake.
The girls 800-meter race was more of a challenge for Tate. She was in second place behind Amherst Steele`s Kasey Schuler on the final turn. Despite the deficit, Tate found one last burst of energy to pass Schuler in the last 50 meters to secure her second win of the evening.
“At first, I really didn`t think I had enough,” Tate said. “Then I got an extra surge of energy and kicked it the last 100.”
“She was just amazing,” said Westlake girls track coach Duane Miller. “She bettered her PR in the mile by 20 seconds and her half was four seconds slower than what she`s run in the open. Her mile was just incredible. I`ve never seen a girl run a mile where she ran negative splits her last two laps.”
While the Berea Braves posted a second-place finish in the boys division, the relay events belonged to Olmsted Falls.
The Olmsted Falls 800 relay team battled all the way to the end before pulling out a victory.
Robbie VanZandt ran the anchor leg and trailed Avon Lake`s Mike Mansnerus by a step at the handoff. After the final turn, VanZandt inched his way ahead of Mansnerus and held off Berea`s Donovan Robertson for first place.
The top four teams in the boys 800 relay broke the meet record of 1:31.20 set by North Olmsted in 2008. The best time was by Olmsted Falls` Adam Harder, Brian Pongallo, Owen Coughlin and VanZandt with a  1:30.17. Berea, Avon Lake and North Olmsted finished second, third and fourth respectively.
“We stepped it up,” VanZandt said. “We knew it was the SWC finals. Everybody ran a great race. Everybody had to show up 100 percent and we did. With the SWC finals, you have that adrenaline going and it`s just a crazy feeling. Even if people are ahead of you, you just get that kick and you don`t feel tired.
“(The last 75 meters) was when I knew I had to step it up a little more. I knew Avon Lake was ahead of me a little bit, but then Berea came up on my left side. I had to put it away there.”
VanZandt and the Bulldogs did not have much time to enjoy the 800 relay. Almost as soon as they were introduced to the crowd for winning the 800, three of the four had to ready themselves for the
400 relay.
The short celebration had no effect on Olmsted Falls. Harder got a good start out of the blocks and handed off to Pongallo, who closed in on the leaders. Jared Early`s third leg proved to be the difference as he had a good line off turn three and gave VanZandt the baton and the lead.
VanZandt was able to hold off Berea`s Mike Lewis to make it two relay championships on the night. Olmsted Falls missed the meet record in the 400 relay by 0.18 seconds.
“It`s a great feeling,” VanZandt said. “We knew this was going to be the year to do it, too. We have an amazing team, four great guys running it.”
Avon Lake`s Sean McCann successfully defended his SWC shot put title with a throw of
57-6¾ inches. He finished more than 2½ feet ahead of Midpark`s Bobby Grace.
“I`ve worked hard for it, so it paid off in the end,” McCann said. “I kind of expected to succeed again. I`ve thrown more this year than probably my sophomore and junior years combined.”
