Third Thursdays are back in Vermilion
Vermilion`s popular Third Thursdays are back for another summer season.
Beginning this week, visitors can stroll the quaint downtown shops or browse among displays of artwork for sale while being serenaded by musical groups performing along Liberty Avenue and Main Street.
The free Music, Flowers & A Sunset concerts will take place the third Thursday of each month now through September 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Music will range from country, jazz and rock to island, Russian folk, Irish and pop. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to enjoy the music. The Inland Seas Maritime Museum will be open, with free admission after 5 p.m. To learn more, visit www.discoververmilion.com.
Looking for classmates
Marion L. Steele High School class of 1974 will have its 35-year class reunion July 10-11 at the Oberlin Inn during the Old Time Jamboree in Amherst. All classmates have been sent informational packets. Anyone planning to attend should return reservations and information sheets by June 5. Cost is $45 per person for both days. Vermilion YÂ Health Fair
Vermilion Family YMCA will host its second annual Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the Y Community Center, 320 Aldrich Road, Vermilion.
This free event offers a variety of information and services for all age groups. Information about financial and program assistance also will be available.
A dietitian will be on hand to assist with diet and exercise questions, and LifeShare will be present for anyone interested in donating blood.
Last call for yearbooks
The last day to order Marion L. Steele High School 2008-09 yearbooks is Thursday.
All orders will be tabulated and sent to Jostens before noon. The yearbook staff will accept half-payments, with the balance due before the end of school.
No extra books will be ordered. Order forms are available in the yearbook room at the high school or at www.jostensyearbooks.com.
Knit one, purl two
Beginning knitting classes are forming now at Ritter Public Library in Vermilion.
Sign up for four classes that meet 10 a.m. Saturdays, beginning June 6.
Learn basic knit and purl stitches as you create a simple project such as a dishcloth or scarf.
Participants should bring size 8 plastic or wooden needles and a skein of dishcloth-weight cotton yarn, such as “Sugar and Cream” brand, to the first session. Class size is limited to six knitters. Reserve spots now by calling the library.
Historically speaking
Margaret Cheney, president of the Lorain County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, president of the Medina County Genealogical Society and a trustee for the Ohio Genealogical Society will speak about using a computer in researching family ancestry at 7:30 p.m. May 27 at the Grange/Schoolhouse, 763 Milan Ave., Amherst. Book chat
The Shorelines Book Club, Ritter Public Library`s afternoon book discussion group, meets 1 p.m. May 28 to talk about “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.”
Friends of the Library
The Friends of the Amherst Public Library will meet at 11:30 a.m. May 27th. New members are welcome.
Recycle cell phones
Friends of Ritter Public Library are recycling old cell phones and used ink cartridges as a fundraiser.
Profits will be used to support library programs and promote reading. Look for collection boxes near the public copiers.
In service
Army Reserve Sgt. 1st Class James O. Jones will be deployed to Iraq with the 762nd Transportation Company based in North Canton.
A platoon sergeant, Jones has served in the military 27 years.
He is employed with the Village of South Amherst. Married, Jones is a 1980 graduate of South Amherst High School.
