Book buddies in Oberlin

Usually, classroom readers are adults, but children in the fourth-grade class of Prospect Elementary are the readers at two community preschools and Eastwood`s kindergarten classes.

In a recent reading event, the “Book Buddies” spent an hour with their younger friends, sharing books about animals.

The student-to-student reading program has been going on for some years, but this is the first year that all fourth-graders have participated, according to Prospect fourth-grade teacher Barb Enos. Her class visits Janet Garrett and her Eastwood kindergartners.

The fourth-graders encourage their buddies to read to them, helping them with the hard words.
“They practice ahead of time, on each other,” Enos said “They also plan questions related to the book or theme of the visit. My kids are also really excited when they see any of their book buddies in public. I always hear about it.”
