Create and Imaginate
Check out some cool gadgets including elastic ropes and an “instant thought transmitter” when Professor Zap presents “Create and Imaginate” 2:30 p.m. June 12 at the Amherst Public Library. The program kicks off the library`s summer reading program.
Upcoming programs will feature magician-escape-artist Ron Price.
All programs will be held at the Main Street Community Center, 255 Park Ave., Amherst. The reading program is free and open to all ages. Donations of nonperishable foods are welcome for the Amherst Food Pantry.

Railway talk
The Vermilion Area Archival Society meets 7 p.m. June 8 at Ritter Public Library to learn about the Lake Erie Interurban Railway from Dennis Lamont, Al Doane and Bob Reese. The meeting is free and open to the public. For information, contact Sandra Neiding at (440) 967-4190.

Want to get in on the global marketplace? EBay power seller Becky Locke-Gagnon will demonstrate how to put an item up for sale on the auction Web site, and she`ll answer questions about pricing, pictures, PayPal, shipping and more at 6 p.m. today at Ritter Public Library.
Classics at Ritter
The evening book club at Ritter Public Library will discuss Bill Bryson`s “A Walk in the Woods” at its 7 p.m. June 2 meeting. Call the library to order a copy, or place your order online at www.ritter.lib.oh.us.
Dig into history
Kids can dig into history, get their faces painted, and learn about Native American crafts at the “Discovering the Past” 2 to 5 p.m. June 14 at Amherst Sandstone Village. This joint effort of the Amherst Historical Society and Firelands Archeological Research Center features an appraisal booth for antiques and collectibles. The event is free, but appraisals cost $5 per item or $7 for two items. Charles Herndendorf will present a program and display on the region`s shipwreck archeology. The research center will be open to the public to observe ongoing work. Food and beverages will be provided by Buckeye BBQ. Crafters and vendors are welcome. Call (440) 988-7255 to reserve a spot. Organic gardening
Mark and Karen Langan of Mulberry Creek Herb Farm will present a free program on organic gardening 7 p.m. June 3 at the Nordson Depot, 671 Franklin Ave., Amherst. The program is hosted by the Friends of Amherst Public Library.
Knit One, Purl Two
Beginning knitting classes are forming at Ritter Public Library in Vermilion. Sign up for a series of four classes that meet Saturdays at 10 a.m. beginning June 6. Learn basic knit and purl stitches as you create a simple project. Participants are asked to bring size 8 plastic or wooden needles and a skein of dishcloth-weight cotton yarn, such as Sugar and Cream brand, to the first session. Class size is limited to six knitters.
Historically speaking
Margaret Cheney, president of the Lorain County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, president of the Medina County Genealogical Society and a trustee for the Ohio Genealogical Society, will speak about using a computer to research family ancestry 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Grange schoolhouse, 763 Milan Ave., Amherst. A short business meeting of the Amherst Historical Society will precede. Social time with refreshments will conclude the evening. For more information, call (440) 988-7255.
Steele class of `74
Marion L. Steele High School class of 1974 will have its 35-year reunion July 10 and 11 at the Oberlin Inn during the Old Time Jamboree in Amherst. Classmates have been sent information packets. Anyone planning to attend should return reservations and information sheets by June 5. Cost is $45 per person for both days. The Shorelines Book Club, Ritter Public Library`s afternoon book discussion group, meets at 1 p.m. Thursday to discuss “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.” In June, the group will discuss “Kabul Beauty School: An American Woman Goes Behind the Veil.” Copies of books may be ordered now at the library.
