Avon academic team heads to finals
The semifinals are over, setting the stage for Avon High School to make its first championship appearance.
The 19th annual Scholastic Games of Lorain County, the county academic championship on radio quiz show, will feature three students from Avon High facing off against three students from Oberlin High School. The Scholastic Games will be broadcast 5 to 6 p.m. today on WEOL AM 930.
The Avon team, consisting of Jayni Rasmussen, Chris Costin, and team captain Kevin Reisdorff, got to the final round by defeating Elyria Catholic High School by a score of 340 to 330 on May 18. It was far from an easy victory, with the teams pacing each other throughout the last half of the competition, culminating with a rare sudden-death overtime.
Scholastic Games is heard weekly, with broadcasts usually presented 6 p.m. Mondays.
All programs are offered as podcasts or streaming audio at www.loraincounty.com after they are broadcast on WEOL.
Avon Lake man wins award
A Cleveland-area group that advocates for elderly driving safety named an Avon Lake man the winner of its “Making a Difference” award.
Gary Lee Clawson, a retired music teacher for the Sheffield-Sheffield Lake Schools, won the award for a lifetime of helping others, including as a resource for those with vision problems. Clawson has been legally blind since 2002.
The group that handed out the award, Keeping Us Safe, cites on its Web site Clawson`s devotion to helping those in need in whatever ways he can.
In addition to his teaching career, Clawson has worked for 28 years at Avon`s Bob-o-Link Golf Course, and for the past 10 years he has served as the secretary of his golf league, which has approximately 100 members.
Clawson has been an active member of Lake Shore United Methodist Church in Avon Lake for 42 years and currently serves on three church committees.
“Not only has Gary not used (blindness) as an excuse for not being so involved in helping others, he`s done the opposite,” the Web site said. “Amongst other things, Gary has started a low-vision support group, the first of its kind in the Avon Lake community. His group meets monthly at the Old Firehouse Community Center in Avon Lake.”
More information about Clawson and the award can be found at www.keepingussafe.org.
