Bloom Catchers in Oberlin

Oberlin`s Garden of the Week competition is back once again thanks to bed-tax dollars from the Oberlin-area Chamber of Commerce and a  Kendal at Oberlin group called the Bloom Catchers.

The Garden of the Week program was designed as a friendly competition encouraging residents to become involved with America In Bloom by adding flower pots and garden beds in front of their homes.

The program was developed in 2005 by Judy Lauschman, director of the Association for Specialty Cut Flower Growers - a national trade association for commercial flower growers - and Dale Preston, president of the Allen Medical Center Foundation.

Bloom Catchers crisscrosses Oberlin searching for the most colorful gardens and best-kept yards by businesses and home owners without professional assistance. For residents to be eligible, the gardens must be visible from the street or front sidewalk. Bloom Catchers will wear badge identification as they approach various Oberlin residents and businesses.

Each garden winner will receive a colorful yard sign marking their yard as a Garden of the Week winner.

Winners will also receive a framed copy of the sign as well.

Bloom Catchers is looking for contestants that have not been previously selected and will try to avoid repeat winners from the previous year. They are looking to select up to six gardens per month through August.

If you have questions or a sign from last year, contact Sharon Pearson administrative coordinator for the City Manager`s Office at (440) 775-7217 or by e-mail at spearson@cityofoberlin.com.
