FHS has an artful goup

On May 27 Firelands High School inducted 12 new members into chapter 2212 of the National Art Honor Society.

Students are invited to the society for meeting the requirements of art scholarship, school and community service through art and honorable character. Students must be in grades 10 to 12.

An induction ceremony was held in the art room and attended by students and two alumni. Firelands High has the only NAHS chapter in Lorain County.

The 12 new members join four seniors: Pamela Battig, Dina Campana, Michael Gedridge and Chad Uehlein. The chapter’s newest members are sophomores Emily Arlington and Erika Beursken; juniors Jessica Arndt, Richard Eastin, Brooke Hikade, Callie Krieg, Emily Loosli, Allison Michener, Michael Morrissette, Nicholas Ritzic and Amanda Roblin; and senior Kelsey Hogan.

Relay for life

The annual Relay for Life Cancer Society Team Fundraiser will be June 14. Known as the Amherst Poker Walk, the event has added a 5K run to this year’s walk.

The first 50 walkers or runners receive free T-shirts. Cost is $10 for anyone signing up by June 10, $12 for those signing on after that date. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. A big party

Brownhelm Congregational Church of Christ will celebrate its 190th anniversary this month. While the actual anniversary date is June 10, the church will observe the date June 13 with a pig roast and a play written by longtime Chronicle-Telegram “The Country Wife” columnist Pat Leimbach.

The pig roast is at 5 p.m., followed by the play at 7:30 p.m. Call the church at (440) 988-2751.

Class reunions

Vermilion High School Class of 1984 will be holding its 25-year reunion over the July 4 weekend with a number of events.

Quaker Steak & Lube will host an informal 6 p.m. gathering July 3, followed by a July 4 morning golf outing.

Anyone interested in golfing should contact Dave Bedillion at dbedilli@amfam.com or (800) 646-9771. A buffet-style dinner catered by Fligner’s will be at the Vermilion-on-the-Lake clubhouse with a 5:30 p.m. social hour and dinner at 6:30 p.m. July 4. Cost is $40 per person.

The weekend ends with a family picnic 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 5 at Lakeview Park in Lorain. Those planning to attend may bring their own food to grill or eat at Rose Cafe at the park.
The Marion L. Steele High School class of 1979 will hold its 30-year reunion as part of the Dancing in the Streets weekend Aug. 1. There will be a cocktail hour at 5:30 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m. at the Amherst VFW, 165 Cleveland Ave. Cost is $30 per person with a cash bar. Big book sale

The annual Friends of Ritter Public Library book sale will be June 25 to 28 in a new location at the offices of the Vermilion Board of Education, 1230 Beechview Drive.

Get a head start on the sale by joining the group for $5, and get into the special 4 to 8 p.m. June 24 presale. Books may be donated for the sale from 1 to 4 p.m. June 20 at the school board offices.

Create and imaginate

Check out some cool gadgets, including elastic ropes and an Instant Thought Transmitter, when Professor Zap presents “Create and Imaginate” at 2:30 p.m. June 12 at the Amherst Public Library. The program kicks off the library’s Summer Reading Program.

All programs are at Main Street Community Center, 255 Park Ave., Amherst. The reading program is free and open to all ages. Donations of nonperishable foods are welcome for the Amherst Food Pantry.

Archival Society and the interurban trains

Vermilion Area Archival Society meets 7 p.m. Monday at Ritter Room of the Ritter Public Library to hear two programs about trains.

Dig into history

Kids can dig into history, get their faces painted and learn about Native American crafts at the “Discovering the Past” antique and collectible appraisals event from 2 to 5 p.m. June 14 at Amherst Sandstone Village.

This free program is a joint effort of the Amherst Historical Society and Firelands Archeological Research Center. It eatures a booth for antique appraisal. Cost is $5 per item, or $7 for two.

Air Force Reserve Staff Sgt. Samuel S. Holbrook, an 11-year medical technician, has been assigned to the Youngstown Air Reserve Station. The son of Ralph Holbrook of Lorain, Samuel Holbrook is a 1991 graduate of Firelands High School.

Learn about preserving food grown in the garden during the Amherst Garden Club meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at Amherst Beaver Creek Visitor Center on North Lake Street.

Linnette Goard of the Lorain County Ohio State University Extension Service is the featured speaker.
