Group helping women get prenatal vitamins
To help area women ensure a healthy start for their babies, Cornerstone Among Women, with a donation from the Bay Village Kiwanis Club, has launched a program to provide two weeks of free prenatal vitamins for pregnant clients.
This will enable clients seeking services at its centers in Elyria and Rocky River to begin taking prenatal vitamins during the two-week lag time between pregnancy test verification and the first prenatal visit with a doctor, said Linda Luecke, CEO of Cornerstone Among Women.
“Taking prenatal vitamins with folic acid is so critical during those early weeks of pregnancy to help prevent birth defects,” Luecke said.
To date, 173 women have benefited from the prenatal vitamins handed out at the centers. In addition, Cornerstone Among Women provides area women with a number of free services, including pregnancy screening tests and limited ultrasounds.
The $100 donation from the Bay Village Kiwanis Club is part of its Young Children Priority One (YCPO) program, which funds special projects to benefit children from conception to age 5. Each month, the club designates a local nonprofit or charity to receive the grant.
James Potter, past president of the Bay Village Kiwanis Club and chairmen of the YCPO program, said that the club became interested in supplying prenatal vitamins when Luecke spoke at a meeting about the desire to launch this type of program.
“Our goal in aiding Cornerstone Among Women is to make sure healthy babies are born by providing pregnant moms that may not otherwise have the resources to buy prenatal vitamins,” Potter said. “We are giving these babies a good running start.”
