Electrical worker hurt at former Ford plant

LORAIN -  An electrical worker received burns to his face and hands while working Monday at the former Ford plant off Baumhart Road.

Electricians from Firelands Electric Lake Erie Division in Lorain were attempting to fix a problem with the power supply at the plant, which now houses several small businesses, according to Lorain fire Capt. Matt Homolya.

The electricians were testing voltage lines about 7 p.m. inside a nearby power house building when electricity surged, Homolya said.

Other workers at the scene “stated they had shut down power to the building but apparently there was still some power running through there,” Homolya said.

Co-workers took the man to Community Regional Medical Center, Homolya said. Another man was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The condition of the first man was not available Monday night.

Power outage causes City Hall evacuation

LORAIN - City Hall was evacuated for about an hour Monday when a power outage led to smoke detectors going off and the Fire Department being called, Mayor Tony Krasienko said.

Power feeds the building at Broadway and West Erie Avenue in three “legs or phases,” Krasienko said.

One of the phases lost power, which caused a couple of motors in the other areas to overheat, Krasienko said. The smoke set off smoke alarms, which summoned the Fire Department.

“Just to be safe, we evacuated the building,” Krasienko said.

Backup generators kept most of the power on, and once Ohio Edison arrived to reset a switch in the affected area, the systems were brought back online, Krasienko said.

Man pleads not guilty in Cleveland robbery

A man accused of forcing his way into a Cleveland home during a midday gunpoint robbery pleaded not guilty Friday to a 14-count indictment.

Michael Adkins, 32, is charged with aggravated robbery, kidnapping, robbery, aggravated burglary and felonious assault in connection with the Oct. 30 robbery.

An Elyria couple and a 5-year-old girl were visiting the 47-year-old tenant of the home when Adkins and another man forced their way inside, according to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office.

Adkins was allegedly armed with a gun and threatened to kill the tenant and demanded money from her, according to a news release. When he was told the woman didn’t have any money, Adkins reportedly pointed the gun at the 5-year-old while the other man, who police have not yet identified, ransacked the house.

Adkins stole $450 from the tenant’s wallet and then ordered the Elyria couple to turn out their pockets, the release said.

He then allegedly told them he should kill them all because they’d seen his face and ordered them into a bedroom closet. The man from Elyria then ran out of the house in an effort to get Adkins and the other man to follow him, the release said.

The robbers then fled, according to the release.

Adkins, who is being held on a $100,000 bond, was arrested in March in West Virginia.

Woman pleads guilty to new drug charge

ELYRIA - An Elyria woman who removed cocaine from the scene of a murder-suicide in 2007 pleaded guilty Friday to a new cocaine charge.

Anne Dougan-Larson, 39, was arrested March 12 in Lorain after failing to signal a turn and turned a cocaine and a crack pipe over to officers.

In addition to the cocaine possession charge, Dougan-Larson also pleaded guilty Friday to driving under suspension and possession of drug paraphernalia. She will be sentenced later this year.

Dougan-Larson, who is now in the Lorain/Medina Community-Based Correctional Facility, originally had been sentenced to probation for her role in removing drugs and drug paraphernalia from the March 2007 crime scene.

Dougan-Larson was asleep when Roger Creak, 41, shot and killed his estranged wife, Tammy Creak, 39, in the basement of Dougan-Larson’s former Lorain home. Roger Creak was high on cocaine at the time, according to toxicology reports.
