Wellington summer concerts begin

The summer Main Street Wellington’s 2009 concert series begins this Sunday when the Wellington High School Jazz Band takes the stand.

All concerts begin at 7 p.m. at the gazebo near Town Hall. In case of rain, concerts will be held across the street at the First Congregational Church, 140 S. Main St.

The preliminary lineup of performers is:

  • June 14 – Wellington High School Jazz Band; Toni Novotny, director
  • June 21 – Dixie Fryed Band: Country/Southern Rock
  • June 28 – Steve Brown: sounds of light jazz
  • July 5 – Solid brass
  • July 12 – Allison Fahler and Friends
  • July 19 – The Sorg Family in three-part harmony
  • July 26 – Becky Burkhardt: “Christmas in July”
  • August 2 – Road Runner: Classic light rock
  • August 9 – To be announced
  • August 16 – Folktic: An evening of folk music

Balloon fest

Volunteers are needed for the Wellington Balloonfest 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Lorain County Fairgrounds.

There will be 19 balloons and organizers are still seeking a sponsor for one of them.

There is no admission but parking is $5 a car. Kids activities start at 11 a.m. and there will be entertainment throughout the day. Artists and crafters will display until 8 p.m.

The balloon launch is set for 6:30 to 7 p.m. and the balloons return at 9:30 p.m. for a balloon glow. The Balloonfest will go on rain or shine, but if there is rain or too much breeze, the balloons will fly at 7 p.m. June 14.

Summer camps

There are still openings for any of the week-long day camps offered by the Oberlin Heritage Center.

Topics include: Junior Docents (for ages 13-17, held the week of June 15-19), Hungry for History (for ages 8-13, held the week of July 20-24), Kids & World Cultures (for ages 8-13, focusing on “Cultures of the Ancient World,” and held the week of July 27- 31) and Friends of Freedom (for kids 8-13, held the week of Aug. 3-7).

Herrick book sale

The Friends of Herrick Memorial Library will host the annual summer book sale on June 19 and 20, at the community room. The hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Volunteers are needed to help with the sale. Call Betty at (440) 647-9424.

Oberlin library

Join James Peake for a little bit of rock, folk, pop and country in the “Music in the Garden” series 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday

Begin knitting or refresh your skills 6 to 8 p.m. June 18 at Oberlin Public Library, 65 S. Main St.The free program with Holly Whiteside will teach you how to read knitting patterns.

Chalk walk workshop

Children ages 5 to 12 are invited to a Chalk Walk Workshop 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Allen Memorial Art Museum.
