Cops investigate Wilkes Villa assault

ELYRIA – Police are still investigating why a Lorain man was jumped at the Wilkes Villa apartment complex Saturday night.

Jerrod Jackson, 27, was taken to EMH Regional Medical Center after being assaulted by several people, according to Elyria police Sgt. Richard Ellis. His condition was not available Sunday.

More than a dozen police officers from at least four different area departments were called to the scene about 10:30 p.m.

Witnesses said two gunshots were fired during the fight, but no one was hit.

No one has been charged in the assault, but police did charge Jackson’s brother, Jermaine Jackson, 25, with obstructing official business.

“Jermaine Jackson, who did not identify himself as the victim’s brother, was giving police a hard time, saying he knew who did it but wasn’t going to tell anyone and he was trying to get to (his brother),” Ellis said.

Police are still looking for the assailants and whoever fired the shots, Ellis said. He said police had the area under control by 11 p.m.

Jerrod Jackson has a criminal record and most recently was convicted of sexual battery in Lorain County Common Pleas Court last year, for which he received three years probation, court records show.

He also has past convictions for assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and intimidation stemming from a single incident, for which he was given a year in prison.

In addition to Elyria police, officers from North Ridgeville and Oberlin, and deputies from the Sheriff’s Office responded to break up the fight. Elyria firefighters were also called but were called off after it was determined they were not needed.
