Oberlin summer concerts
E.T. King kicked off Oberlin’s 17th Annual Summer Concert Series last Friday. The concerts continue throughout the summer with the following lineup:
- Friday — Cats on Holiday, American-influenced roots, country, Cajun and blues
- June 26 — Geeze Cats, late ’50s and early ’60s rock ’n’ roll
- July 3 — Heelsplitter & Swamp Rattlers, acoustic, featuring guitar, banjo, and mandolin
- July 10 — Battle of the Bands, still accepting applications
- July 17 — Tie-Dye Harvest, classic rock, original music, improv and tie-dying
- July 24 — Dan Zola Orchestra, 19-piece big band, swing and dance
- July 31 — Walkin’ Cane & Kristine Jackson, blending jazz, soul and rock ’n’ roll
- Aug 7 — Patriots Band, American-style hometown concert band
To enjoy the concerts, arrive before the 7 p.m. start time on Tappan Square and bring a blanket or a lawn chair. Free popcorn is available, and each week, Peppy the Clown will entertain.
While you are downtown, check out the Oberlin Summer Theater Festival’s free performances of “The Tempest” and “The Glass Menagerie” at 9 p.m. in Hall Auditorium following the Friday concerts from June 26 to July 17.

Scrapbooking benefit for church steeple
If you love to scrapbook, consider joining fellow enthusiasts for a 12-hour marathon 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. June 27 at First United Methodist Church in Wellington.
The cost is $35 and includes lunch and dinner; $25 of each fee will go to the fund to repair the church’s steeple.

June events at Kendal
A free lecture on small wildcats will be 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Kendal at Oberlin by Jim Sanderson, the world’s foremost authority on these animals.
He will speak about the family of cats, the global small wildcat conservation efforts, the threats faced by these animals, their world population status and who’s doing what to help ensure their future.
Next week, Don Kraus, CEO of Citizens for Global Solutions, will speak on the topic “From Super Power to Super Partner: Global Goals in the Obama Nation” at noon on Tuesday.
The luncheon lecture is open to the public, and the cost is $10.

The Kendal Gallery features two artists, whose works remain through the month of June. Mixed media painting by artist, Lynne O’Brien, represent two series, Letters and Garden, while Charlotte Elsner’s images are press-printed on oriental papers, then cut out and combined as print collages.
“Leafing Out,” a quilt exhibit by artist, Polly Carroll, is in the Langston Gallery. An artist’s reception will be at 10 a.m. June 24.
In addition, the works of photographer Willard Sciberling, depicting Austria, Greece and Turkey in 1956, continue to be shown in the Friends Gallery through June.
All of the events are open to the public at Kendal at Oberlin, 600 Kendal Drive.

Knitting at the library
Holly Whiteside will present a program on knitting at Oberlin Public Library, 65 S. Main St., 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday.
Use the opportunity to begin knitting, or refresh your skills.
Oberlin farmers’ market
Check out what’s growing at local farms at the Oberlin Farmers’ Market 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays through October in the parking lot next to Oberlin City Hall.
FAVA summer art camps
There’s still time to register for art camps at the Firelands Association for the Visual Arts at the New Union Center for the Arts in Oberlin.

Ham radio relay
Doug Bankston of Wellington Township is hosting a 24-hour ham radio event at his home on Cemetery Road and is looking for other ham radio enthusiasts to take part.
The first annual Amateur Radio Relay League Field Day is 2 p.m. June 27 to 2 p.m. June 28.
Other ham radio enthusiasts, both around the country and around the world, will be communicating with each other for that 24-hour period.
Licensed ham radio operators are invited to bring their radios and antennas to participate in the event.
