LAGRANGE — The “Ghost of Johnny Cash” will be making his way to LaGrange next weekend.
Terry Lee Goffee, a Wellington resident and Johnny Cash impersonator, has been entertaining crowds across the United States. It’s his way of bringing the famous country singer back to life.
And, on June 28, Goffee, will give his local fans a free concert they will never forget.
The sixth annual Sight and Hearing Terry Lee Goffee Fan Appreciation concert, which is sponsored by the LaGrange Lions Club, will be from 1 to 6 p.m. — rain or shine — at the LaGrange Lions Club Park, 240 Glendale St., LaGrange.
Co-chairing the event this year are LaGrange Lions Club members Richard and Kay Hegadore.
Before Goffee started the fan appreciation day, he and his band, performed at the LaGrange Lions yearly festivals. But, with him now traveling around the country, and recently in Ireland, it is not easy for his local fans to see Goffee and the Train of Love Band.
“Terry Lee wanted to give to his local fans a free concert, and we were looking for something to be able to raise money to help support people in LaGrange/Keystone school and the surrounding communities with eye glasses and exams,” Kay Hegadore said. “After talking together, we came up with the idea to have a yearly concert.”
Goffee has been impersonating Johnny Cash for a number of years. Prior to performing, Goffee worked for WOBL as a deejay-music director, as well as a program director until he made the choice to leave due to scheduling conflicts.
Today, Goffee is living every artist’s dream — to be able to do what he loves and keep the bills paid. He is on the road about 180 days a year performing between 60 and 70 shows.
For Goffee’s fans that are unable to attend the concert next weekend check out the release of “Guitar Hero 5.” Goffee was chosen to duplicate Johnny Cash’s moves from his song, “Ring of Fire.” He also will supply Cash’s famous greeting, “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash.” “Guitar Hero 5” will be released in the fall.
The concert next Sunday also will feature gospel singer Robert Blankenship and Bluegrass performers The Muddy Krick Mountain Boys. The Pure Country Line Dancers will perform and Gold Country WOBL-1380 AM will broadcast live from the event.
During the concert, the LaGrange Lions Club members will sell pulled pork dinners, hamburgers, sloppy joes, hot dogs, French fries, assorted beverages and strawberry shortcake. The day will also include raffles and silent auctions.
The money raised from the event is used to provide eye exams and glasses to those who cannot afford either, as well as eye research.
Additionally, every summer the LaGrange Lions Club sends special needs children to Camp Echoing Hills in Warsaw, Ohio.
This year, two boys will be going to camp thanks to the LaGrange Lions Club.
“We provide camp fees and any extras for the week,” Kay Hegadore said, noting the parents provide transportation to and from the camp. “In the past, we have sent children from Keystone, Wellington, Amherst and Elyria.”
Hegadore said it always warms her heart knowing she and her fellow Lions Club members are helping children.
“To see a child laugh or smile always brings warmth to your heart. When you know you are doing for some who needs a little extra, it always makes you feel special, too,” she said.
