Lorain educators honored
Lorain Schools held its first excellence awards ceremony at the end of the school year and Stacey Vore, Lorain Southview High School, was named District Teacher of the Year. Vore will represent the district at the state level.

Open house
A free open house and community pride day is noon to 3 p.m. today at FirstEnergy’s West Lorain plant, located at 7101 W. Erie Ave. Visitors can tour the facility and find out what happens when you flip a light switch in your home. Enjoy free hot dogs, popcorn, ice cream, funnel cakes, nachos and beverages during your visit. Visitors can sign up with FirstEnergy Solutions to save 10 percent on electric generation for remainder of 2009 and 5 percent through 2010. Anyone who signs up to become an FES customer will be entered into a drawing to win a year of free electric generation. The first 200 who sign up at the event will receive a free FES stadium blanket. There will also be free kid-friendly activities including clowns and face painting. Supplies are limited.
Free concerts
The “Lorain County High School All Stars” will perform 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. today at Black River Landing and “Fayrewether” will perform 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 15 as part of the Lorain Port Authority’s Saturday Night Concert Series.
Cancer benefit
The first annual Night at the Races to benefit the American Cancer Society will be 6 p.m. today at St. John Ukranian Catholic Church, 3038 Charleston Ave. Tickets are $12 per person in advance and $15 at the door and include dinner, pop, dessert and beer. Advance horse sales are $10 or $15 the night of the event. Winners must be present to claim prizes if their horse wins. The night will include a 50/50 raffle, side board raffles, a lottery tree, door prizes and a silent auction. Golf fundraiser
The Lorain County Free Clinic will hold its 13th annual Charity Golf Benefit on July 24 at the Pine Brook Golf Club, 11043 N. Durkee Road, Grafton. A donation of $85 per person or $325 for a registered foursome includes lunch, beverages, 18 holes of golf, a cart, skins game and a steak dinner. There will also be raffles, prizes and hole-in-one opportunities throughout the day. There are corporate sponsorships available.

Class reunions
-The Lorain Admiral King class of 1999’s 10-year reunion will be held Aug. 15 at The Antler’s. Registration for the reunion can be done at www.classcreator.com/Lorain-OH-Admiral-King-1999. Boat tours
Shuttle boats embark at 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday nights all summer long from the Jackalope restaurant. The success of Wednesday and Thursday tours led the Port Authority to expand the service to Fridays. Enjoy a serene evening tour of area wildlife, flora, fauna and landmarks of interest. Arrive 15 minutes early to ensure an on-time departure. Passengers must weigh at least 30 pounds to board. Tickets are $12. Private tours of up to 20 passengers per vessel are still available and can be booked by calling the Lorain Port Authority at (440) 204-2273.
