Safety Town offers two more sessions

It’s not too late to sign up for Safety Town.

Safety Town is a one-week course that teaches children safe practices at school and at home. Children are instructed on when, where and how to cross the street, bike safety, pedestrian safety, school bus safety, fire safety, seat belt safety, 911 emergency calls, stranger danger and what to do if they find a gun.

It also allows children to become comfortable around law enforcement and those from other agencies, and what the many different uniforms and cars look like.

The program, put on by The Elyria Police Department and Elyria Kiwanis Club, runs 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday with a graduation ceremony 9 a.m. Friday that includes guest speakers. The last two sessions of Safety Town are the weeks starting Monday and July 20.

Registration cards are available at the school where your child will attend kindergarten or the Elyria Police Department, or call Mary Inman-Gibbs at (440) 326-1332 or Sue Stefek at (440) 326-1337.

Safety Town is free to Elyria residents and surrounding areas through the cooperation of the Elyria Police Department, the Kiwanis Club, and other donors.

Benefit raises money for Parkinson’s

Living with a chronic, progressive disease that causes uncontrollable tremors, stiffness and difficulty in speaking has not been easy for Doug Gigliotti.

Every day has been a struggle since a day in 1997 when his hand shook so badly that he could barely finish his breakfast. Since he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, the 51-year-old Elyria man said he has learned to live life to the fullest.

“You just have to learn to do what you can when you can,” he said. “It will never get better. It will always get worse. There is no cure – yet. Hopefully, we will find one soon.”

To raise money to help in that effort, Gigliotti is organizing a steak fry benefit on Aug. 1.

Starting at 4 p.m. at Elyria Catholic High School, the steak fry will benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson Disease.

Tickets are $25 per person, which includes a steak, baked potato, salad and roll. There will be a cash bar, along with 50/50, tip boards and Chinese auctions.

In addition, Rudy Ruettiger, the Notre Dame football player who inspired the movie “Rudy,” will speak

Tickets are limited to 600. For information, call (440) 213-8209.
