Fair food: Wellington band doughnuts
Just about everyone I talked to at the fair told me I couldn’t leave without taking a dozen of the famous Wellington band doughnuts home with me. I decided I had to see what all the fuss was about. “Your doughnuts are legendary,” I greeted band director Toni Novotny when she emerged from the back [...]

High school volleyball: Coach Whitsel, daughters sparking Brookside
A coach who coaches his or her own child is always in a delicate situation. There are, however, always conditions that can ease the sensitivity. Winning, of course, is a wonderful way to defuse any tension. It’s even better when the program in question never had a whole lot of success before the coach and [...]
Fulton sparks Westlake past Avon Lake in girls soccer showdown
CLEVELAND — Someone said Sunday afternoon that Julia Fulton has spent hour after hour practicing her left-footed shot in the backyard. Fulton, a senior midfielder on Westlake’s girls soccer team, denied it steadfastly. She called the information “erroneous.” Erroneous information or not, Fulton put a left-footer into the Avon Lake net for what became the [...]
Petrak: Quinn should be Browns’ QB
It’s time. While I highly doubt Browns coach Eric Mangini will end the suspense and announce his starting quarterback today, he should. The regular season is less than two weeks away, the Browns have only two practices this week and the goal of the preseason finale is to not get anyone hurt. So the quarterback [...]

A film study and a mental journey to a happier time provided the answer, and the results [...]
Fair food: Italian meatball sandwich
Well, it’s been a while since I posted on the fair food I’d been checking out, but, trust me, that doesn’t mean I haven’t been eating. A couple days ago some perfectly innocent — and I’m sure perfectly delicious — fried green tomatoes put me over the edge. I just happened to be eating these [...]
