Eat fresh in Oberlin
Free vegetables will be provided to low-income residents of southern Lorain County 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
The distribution is for low-income residents living in Oberlin, Wellington, LaGrange, Kipton and the following townships: New Russia, Carlisle, Brighton, LaGrange, Penfield, Camden, Rochester, Pittsfield and Wellington.
Some of the garden bounty will be from Oberlin Community Services’ own plots, which grow tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini and green beans, said Linda Arbogast, the center’s executive director.
Those picking up produce must have identification, verification of address and paycheck stubs showing their income is no more than 150 percent of the poverty level, according to Arbogast.

Meanwhile, Plant a Row for the Hungry, which operates from Gardenscapes Nursery in Camden Township, collected nearly 500 pounds of produce last weekend for Second Harvest Food Bank, according to nursery owner Joanna Thomas
About 15 people dropped off produce Saturday and Sunday, said Thomas, who also contributed fresh-grown produce from her own plot.
Grace Lutheran rummage sale
There will be a rummage and bake sale at Grace Lutheran Church 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 4 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 5.
The church is at 310 W. Lorain St. in Oberlin. Lunch will be served 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 5.
Anchor to speak at Oberlin church
Rust United Methodist Church will feature Danita Harris as the Women’s Day guest speaker Sept. 13.
Harris has been a television personality for years, anchoring “Good Morning Cleveland” and NewsChannel 5 at Noon. She is now is the anchor for NewsChannel 5 at 6 and 11.
Harris has also served as a guest host on ABC’s “The View” and interviewed talk show host Oprah Winfrey.
She volunteers as a board adviser to the Girls Club of Ohio and previously she served as a columnist for Blessings Magazine, Connection, and The Good News Magazine.
Harris and her husband, the Rev. Brad Pratt, started a church called “Fresh Wind Ministry” to help encourage people to live spiritually healthy lives.
The theme for the Women’s Day program service is “In Times Like These.”
Everyone is encouraged to attend the 11 a.m. service at the church, 128 Groveland St. in Oberlin. For more information, contact the church at (440)774-4905.
Malabar Farm talk in Pittsfield Twp.
The Pittsfield Township Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Pittsfield Township Hall at the corner of state Routes 58 and 303.
After the business meeting, Ralph Hayes will present a program about Pulitzer Prize-winning author Louis Bromfield and Malabar Farm.
Bromfield, who hosted the wedding of Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart, was a leader in early conservation efforts and a pioneer in sustainable agriculture.
The program is free and open to the public.
