Midview calendar helps defray pay-to-play fees
GRAFTON — They may not exactly be models, but the Midview High School football players and cheerleaders gave it their best shot, and it’s all for a good cause. After the November failure of the school levies, the Midview School District increased the fees for its pay-to-play policy, and it stopped publishing a school calendar. [...]
Browns players mingling in new-look locker room
BEREA — Braylon Edwards is out of his comfort zone. And he likes it. For four years, he occupied the same locker at Browns headquarters. He was among his fellow receivers, adjacent to the quarterbacks and across from the tight ends. In the first year of the Eric Mangini Era, Edwards is on the other [...]

Indians 5, Orioles 4: Marte’s home run with two outs in the ninth gives Tribe the win
BALTIMORE — Andy Marte got the pitch he was looking for, an errant fastball that Jim Johnson would love to have back. “Over the plate. That was a mistake,” said Marte, whose two-out, two-run homer in the ninth inning gave the Cleveland Indians a 5-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night. Johnson (3-5) [...]

Fair rolls into weekend with high marks
If the recession is affecting this year’s Lorain County Fair, it wasn’t evident at Thursday’s Junior Fair livestock auction. A record was set for grand champion single fryer rabbit. The buyer — Lorain County Sheriff Phil Stammitti — paid $800 for Jacqueline Squires’ meat rabbit, resetting his own previous record of $725 paid in 2004. [...]

Lorain Law Director Pat Riley’s name will be on the November ballot. The Lorain County Board of Elections voted 2-1 Thursday to OK putting Riley on the ballot as the Democratic candidate. Republican board member Helen Hurst was absent. Riley’s inclusion was in dispute after paperwork filled out went missing after he was chosen by [...]

Junior Fair participants saw dollar signs for their efforts Thursday afternoon at the annual Junior Fair Livestock Auction. Meat rabbits, meat chickens, market goats, turkeys and market lambs were sold to the highest bidder throughout the afternoon as crowds packed the Junior Fair Show Ring in Building 9. Each child strode in turn to the [...]

A cowboy hurt last night in the rodeo at the Lorain County Fair is in stable condition, according to a spokeswoman at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Nelson Miller of Coshocton was bucked from his horse and apparently kicked in the head during the bareback bronc riding portion of the rodeo. He was LifeFlighted from [...]
Horse judging Wednesday afternoon at the fair
Wednesday afternoon I wandered over to the ring outside the horse barn and caught a little of the judging of the draft horses and ponies and farm horses and ponies. The majestic animals walking, trotting and reversing had drawn quite a crowd, and the “oohs” and “ahs” of admiration were audible, as were the thank-you [...]
Fair food: Cheese sizzle and fried green tomatoes
I’ve been eying the cheese sizzle for days, and since I’ve heard of the movie “Fried Green Tomatoes” but had never had the actual food, I was eager to try those as well. So I got both wrapped up to go after the PRCA rodeo wrapped up Wednesday night at the fair. A number of [...]
Fair food: Cold pizza
I made a major fair food mistake yesterday afternoon. I was running around like crazy, trying, yet again, to be three different places at once, and I knew it was eat now, or forget it. So I hastily grabbed a slice of pizza from a stand near the grandstand. After all, how can you go [...]

Faces at the fair: Wednesday afternoon
I was videoing draft horse and farm horse judging Wednesday afternoon when some fairgoers spotted my Chroniclet.com T-shirt and asked me to snap their picture. Nicole Russo of Elyria, Sarah Majoras of Elyria and Cassie Riddick of Grafton said they had just checked out the LifeFlight helicopter and eaten some fried veggies. It was the [...]

The series was created “to encourage cowboys to enter rodeos [...]
Kids Fun Show allows young attendees to show off
WELLINGTON — One of the sweetest features at the Lorain County Fair is the Kids Fun Show. If a child can walk and talk, he or she is probably big enough to win a ribbon, plaque and hat. Youngsters up to — and including 8-year-olds — are eligible to enter. They just have to show [...]
Age just a number? Browns’ Lewis hits 30, still believes he can carry the rushing load
BEREA – Jamal Lewis hit the big 3-0 Wednesday. He didn’t keel over, start walking with a cane or announce his retirement. He did take some ribbing from his teammates. “Talk about the ’70s and Ozzie Newsome,” receiver Braylon Edwards said as they switched spots in front of the assembled media. The history of the [...]
Girls tennis 2009: Elyria Catholic duo eyes return to state tournament
Norm Weber The Chronicle-Telegram Jacqueline Sammon and Ashley Herrick set the bar awfully high at Elyria Catholic when they won the Division II state doubles championship in 2006. At least seniors Morgan Baker and Emily Mueller have something to shoot for this season. Baker and Mueller were freshmen when Sammon and Herrick won EC’s last [...]
Crushers find late magic, beat Wild Things
AVON – The Lake Erie Crushers’ magic number to qualify for the playoffs is eight. With 10 games remaining in the regular season, every win and every game, means something. So it was only fitting that the Crushers had to tap into that late-inning “Freight Magic” on Wednesday night to keep the five-game winning streak [...]
Indians’ Huff survives bump in the road, beats Royals
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Snoozing on the way to the ballpark, David Huff was jolted by a crash. A car had lost control in the rain and slid into the side of the team bus, a startling wake-up call for the Cleveland rookie. Once Huff got to the field: crickets, just as he likes it. [...]

WESTLAKE – A new regime has taken over at Westlake, and the leaders have been pleased with the transition so far. Mark Campo, former head coach at Admiral King, is now boss at the Hilliard Boulevard school where football success has been difficult to come by. The Demons haven’t had a winning season since 2004 [...]
Boys soccer: Elyria Catholic can’t take advantage of Lake Catholic’s disadvantage, fall 2-1 in season opener
ELYRIA – Lake Catholic played short-handed for 64 minutes and 13 seconds of the 80-minute game Wednesday, but they still had enough firepower to walk off Knights of Columbus Field with a 2-1 season-opening win over Elyria Catholic. The Cougars played a man short for most of the game because Emmanel Valderamma was ejected from [...]
Police exercise gasses residents
LORAIN — Mike and Amy George didn’t complain to anyone a year ago when Lorain police conducting training exercises with new gas masks at the nearby Amherst Gun Club fired off pepper spray that wafted a half-mile into their Deerfield housing development off Oak Point Road. But they decided enough was enough after both were [...]
