Lorain

Rib burnoff

Greater St. Matthew’s A.M.E. Church is holding its first rib burnoff 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the church, 1909 W. 24th St., Lorain.

Booths are still available for this family affair. There is a 25 percent discount on booths if you bring or provide entertainment like a choir, dancers, fashion show, etc. Booth space is still available for the rib competition, food/merchandise and informational handouts.

There will be first- and second-place awards given for the best ribs.

Badge lab

The Lorain County Red Cross Chapter and local Boy Scout leaders will host one of their annual Readyman Badge Labs from 9 a.m. to noon today at the Red Cross, 2929 West River Road North, Elyria.

Webelo Scouts will complete the requirements for the Readyman pin. The cost is $7 per Scout and adult leader which includes the pin and a hot dog lunch.

Hispanic festival

There will be a Latino Festival noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Lakeview Park celebrating Hispanic culture, music, food and art.

Latino recording artist Justo Saborit will perform at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Other groups performing include Alma De Mexico, Raices Latinas and Voices de la Calle.

Work from Joseph Carrion Photography and samples of Puerto Rican and Mexican artwork will also be on display. Food and beverages will be sold by the Mexican Mutual Club and the Puerto Rican Home Club.

Fundraiser

Holy Trinity Church will hold a breakfast/brunch fundraiser from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Center, 25th Street and Elyria Avenue, Lorain.

The menu includes scrambled eggs, bacon sausage, hash browns, waffles, French toast, Danish and orange juice, coffee or tea.

The cost is $7 for adults, $3 for children ages 3 to 8. Tickets are available at the door.

Spa evening

Enjoy an evening of pampering at Belleza Salon and Spa on Monday when Easter Seals Northern Ohio presents “Renew You!”

Attendees will enjoy salon services including upper body chair massages, express facial, makeup application with a lesson and a buff and polish manicure. Finger foods, a signature cocktail, a raffle and a fashion show courtesy of Fashion Bug will round out the evening.

Reservations are $50 and 10 reservations will be taken for one of three time slots , 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Proceeds will benefit Easter Seals programs including home care and speech-language therapy.

Youth program

Joshua Bender, a junior at Brookside High School, participated in the HOBY Youth Leadership program held this summer at Ohio Northern University.

The East Elyria Kiwanis Club sponsored Bender.

HOBY was created by Hugh O’Brian in 1958 with a mission to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. The core values of HOBY include volunteerism, integrity, excellence, diversity and community partnership.

Red Cross class

A basic first aid course is being offered 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 26 and will cover treatment of accidental injuries or sudden illness who require immediate care. Adult CPR is also included. Clam bake

Century Council of Community Health Partners is sponsoring a clam bake 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 26 at St. Peter’s Pavilion, 3501 Oberlin Ave., Lorain.

Entertainment will be provided. Attendees can look forward to side board raffles, Chinese basket raffles and a special wine basket raffle.

Health program

The next program of the Living Well Series, “Prelude to Pink,” is scheduled for Sept. 26. The series of programs geared toward women’s health and well being are held 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Community Regional Medical Center in Ross Conference Rooms 1 and 2.

Tickets are $15 and attendees will be treated to a lunch and an education program that cuts away the clutter to provide current advice, wisdom and enlightenment.

Proceeds from the Living Well Series benefit the Women’s Fund Endowment which is used to award grants to projects that serve women and girls in Lorain County.

Pancake breakfast

The Lofton Henderson Detachment 474 Marine Corps League is hosting a pancake breakfast from

8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 27 at the AMVETS Post 47, 30th Street and Broadway, Lorain.

Military recruit

Belicia Adams joined the United States Army under the delayed entry program, which gives recruits the opportunity to delay entering active duty for up to one year.

The enlistment gives the new soldier the option to learn a new skill, travel and become eligible to receive as much as $50,000 toward a college education.

After completion of basic military training, soldiers receive advanced individual training in their career job specialty prior to being assigned to their first permanent duty station. The recruit also receives a $5,000 enlistment bonus.

Adams is a 2009 graduate of Admiral King High School and is the daughter of Isabel Rivera of Lorain.

Penny collection

Easter Seals Northern Ohio continues to accept donations of pennies and other coins at its Elyria office, 41641 North Ridge Road, Suite D through September.

The donations will help support programs and services for people with disabilities.

A donation of 500 pennies ($5) will provide craft material for 10 children at one of Easter Seals’ summer programs.

Farmer’s market

The Black River Landing Farmer’s Market is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday (rain or shine) inside the brick Transportation Center.

All the products sold at the market are grown, raised or processed in Ohio. Products include fresh produce, baked goods, homemade dog treats and candies.
