Want a $350K house? Home for Hope raffle almost over

AMHERST — This is the final weekend for anyone who wants to walk through a $350,000-plus home, which is being raffled off by Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland Inc.

The go-green Home for Hope is part of the 20-acre Copper Creek development at Pyle South Amherst and Middle Ridge roads.

It is being raffled off as the top prize in a Friday event sponsored. Proceeds support families staying at Ronald McDonald House in Cleveland while their children are being treated at Northeast Ohio medical centers.

More than 1,000 raffle tickets costing $100 apiece have been purchased since the end of June when the home was first opened to the public, according to Samantha Stroud, marketing and communications manager for Ronald McDonald House.

“This is a conservation development and the first of its kind for our area,” she said.

Construction began in July 2008 and the house was finished around Memorial Day. All of the labor was provided by students attending Lorain County Joint Vocational School. The students, mostly juniors and seniors, worked on various aspects of the house, including plumbing and industrial electricity.

“They built it from the ground up under supervision of master tradesmen,” Stroud said.

The “green” home as well as other homes in the 40-lot Copper Creek development are being built by R.J. Perritt Homes.

Designated as a conservation development means half of the 20 wooded acres with walking trails will forever be designated as green space, Stroud said.

It also means the homes, including the Home for Hope, boast such eco-friendly features as a tankless water heating system, flooring made from bamboo, as well as floor coverings from recycled cork and corn fiber.

“Since its not fabric, the carpeting is stain resistant,” Stroud said.

The home also includes furniture and landscaping donated by area retailers.

A total of 30 prizes are being raffled off in recognition of 2009 being the 30th anniversary of Ronald McDonald House, according to Stroud. Other major prizes include a Honda Civic Hybrid donated by Jack Matia Honda, luxury suites for Cleveland Cavs, Browns and Indians games, as well as several $1,000 gas and groceries packages.

Tickets may be purchased in person during this weekend’s final open houses 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Sunday, or online at www.
