LaGrange trustees vote to buy land
LAGRANGE TWP. — LaGrange Fire & Rescue may have a little more elbow room if the township trustees are successful in purchasing a house and lot north of the fire station.
Trustees voted 2-0 Tuesday night to offer $20,000 for the property at 205 N. Main St.
The township should get a response on whether the offer is accepted in a matter of a week or so, said township trustee Gary Burnett, who voted along with Marlon Ford to make the offer. The third trustee, Rita Canfield, was not at the meeting.
If the offer is accepted, the township plans to tear down the house and use the land for parking and any future expansion of the station, according to Burnett.
Demolition costs are estimated to be $8,000 to $10,000.
Fire Chief James Rader said there are no plans to expand the station, which was built in 1994. However, this could be a good time to make the purchase because of the depressed economy.
“We’ll never buy it any cheaper,” he said.
Rader said the house on the property is not bad on the outside, but the inside has deteriorated.
