Clam bake

Century Council of Community Health Partners is sponsoring a clam bake 5 to

9 p.m. today at St. Peter’s Pavilion, 3501 Oberlin Ave., Lorain.

The menu will be delicious, and entertainment will be provided. Attendees can look forward to sideboard raffles, Chinese basket raffles and a special wine basket raffle.

A donation of $27.50 will cover the cost, and proceeds will benefit women’s and children’s projects in the community.

Pancake breakfast

The Lofton Henderson Detachment 474 Marine Corps League will host a pancake breakfast 8 a.m. to

1 p.m. Sunday at the AMVETS Post 47, 30th Street and Broadway Avenue, Lorain.

Debutante ball

The 45th annual “Night in Budapest Debutante

Ball & Dinner” will be 5 to 11:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Hungarian Reformed Church Social Hall, 1691 E. 31st St., Lorain.

A social hour begins a

5 p.m. followed by dinner at

6 p.m. and dancing to “The Hungarians” 8 to 11:30 p.m.

A donation of $20 will include dinner and dancing. The dinner menu includes chicken soup, schnitzel, roast chicken, parsley potatoes, vegetable, salad and dessert.

The ball is sponsored by the American Hungarian Council of Lorain County.

Artist debuts

Lion of Judah Records announced that Fairfield Christian Center will host an artists debut 5 p.m. Oct. 3 at the church, 2002 28th St. in Lorain.

Five new artists - Jessica Ruiz, Jordan Welch, Imaris Riveras, Sharon Jackman and Frankie Gonzalez - will be showcased.

Fundraising cruise

The Port Works Committee will host a sunset cruise fundraiser for Issue 31 at

6:30 p.m. Friday on the Jet Express IV.

The boat will depart from the Black River landing at

6:30 p.m. and return at

8:30 p.m.

Tickets are $100 per person or $175 per couple and are available by calling Ralph at (440) 714-0734 or by e-mailing theportworkslevy@yahoo.com.

Tickets include hors d’oeuvres, beverages and live music provided by Paul Christensen.

Issue 31 is the Lorain Port Authority 1-mill renewal levy on the Nov. 3 ballot.

Steak fry

The Lorain County Free Clinic’s benefit steak fry will be 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 9 at DeLuca’s Place in the Park, 6075 Middle Ridge Road, Lorain.

Music will be provided by deejay Dennis Gabrie. Raffles and door prizes will be on- going until 11 p.m.

A $20 donation includes a steak, potato, salad, dessert and beverages. Proceeds will benefit the area’s medically uninsured.

Military grad

Air Force Airman Darius Thompson graduated from his eight-week basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Thompson trained in physical fitness, Air Force core values, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an applied science associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Thompson is the son of Jennifer Bentley of Lorain and is a 2008 graduate of Clearview High School.

Historic society

The Black River Historical Society meets at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 in the fellowship hall at First Congregational Church, 4th Street and Washington Avenue in Lorain.

The evening’s program on the Civil War will be given by Tom Temerario.

The meeting is open to the public and newcomers are welcome.

Farmers market

The Black River Landing Farmers Market is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday (rain or shine) inside the brick Transportation Center.

All the products sold at the market are grown, raised or processed in Ohio. Products include fresh produce, baked goods, homemade dog treats and candies.

Book discussion

Adults are invited to attend a book discussion of “An Open Book: Coming of Age in the Heartland” by Lorain native and Pulitzer Prize-winning author and literary critic Michael Dirda at 7 p.m. Monday.

Free copies of the book will be given out (while supplies last) to those attending the discussion.

Food orders

Regardless of income, “Great Food For All” orders will be taken 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 3 at Sheffield Lake United Church of Christ, 603 Sunset Ave.

Orders can also be placed at www.greatfoodforall.com for local delivery.

The program allows people to buy a “box” of food for a set price and save money.

Rummage sale

United Church of Christ, 603 Sunset Ave., Sheffield Lake, will host a rummage and bake sale 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday through Oct. 3.

The sale will feature household items, clothing and baked goods.

A $2-per-bag sale will be

9 a.m. to close on Oct. 3.

If you wish to donate items, drop them off at the church between 4 and 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

Volleyball fundraiser

The Brookside High School Girls Varsity Volleyball Team is hosting a “Volley for the Cure” game against Buckeye High School at 7 p.m. Thursday at Brookside High School, 1812 Harris Road, Sheffield.

Proceeds for breast cancer research are going to the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation.

The event will include a 50/50 raffle, a bake sale, door prizes and raffles.

Regular admission is $5, but students wearing a “Volley For the Cure” T-shirt get in free. Adults wearing the

T-shirt get in for $2.

The T-shirts will be available for purchase at the game for $5.

Tupperware bingo will be 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Sheffield Lake Community Center, 4575 Lake Road, Sheffield Lake.

Pizzas needed

Easter Seals Northern Ohio is looking for Lorain County pizzerias that are interested in being a part of the “A Slice of Heaven” Pizza Bakeoff sponsored by UAW Local 2000.

The bakeoff is scheduled for Oct. 13, and attendees will vote for the winner of Best Pizza in Lorain County.

All proceeds benefit the services and programs provided by Easter Seals that allow local children and adults with disabilities and other special needs the opportunity to live, work, learn and play in our community.

Volunteers needed

New Life Hospice is looking for caring individuals who want to make a difference in the lives of terminally ill patients and their families.

New Life Hospice volunteers provide emotional support, socialization and a connection to the community for patients who are often isolated and homebound.

Volunteers provide respite to caregivers, run errands, provide transportation and help with special events. There are also opportunities for volunteers to help in the office.

Community Health Partners Wellness and Fitness Center is offering fitness program consultations.

The consults are $15 for

30 minutes with a fitness specialist who will review your current exercise program and design changes so you can meet your fitness goals.
