Browns update: Derek Anderson to start at QB Sunday
The Brady Quinn Era lasted 2½ games.
Browns coach Eric Mangini announced this morning that Derek Anderson will start at quarterback Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
Quinn, who’s 1-5 as a starter in his career, won the quarterback competition during the preseason but flopped as the Browns have opened 0-3. He’s completed 61 percent of his passes for 400 yards (5.4 an attempt), a touchdown, three interceptions, 10 sacks and a 62.9 rating. He was 6-for-30 on third-down conversions, which prohibited the offense from sustaining drives and put the overtasked defense in difficult spots.
Anderson replaced Quinn in the second half Sunday against Baltimore. He converted some third downs and led a field-goal drive, but threw three interceptions.
Anderson was in a similar situation in 2007. He lost a training camp competition to Charlie Frye, but replaced him in Week 1. He became the starter in Week 2 against Cincinnati, leading a 51-45 victory, and earned a trip to the Pro Bowl after winning 10 games.
