SHEFFIELD — Brookside High School was locked down for about an hour Wednesday afternoon after a threat involving a gun was found scrawled in a boys’ bathroom.

The note written in pencil indicated the student had a gun, according to Sheffield Police Chief Larry Bliss.

Police arrived at 1:25 p.m. and students were locked in their classrooms at 1:50 p.m. while four Sheffield police officers and three Sheffield Lake police officers searched, Bliss said.

No gun was found.

“We searched the lockers and there were a core of students we spoke to we believed to have been involved in this,” Bliss said.

If the culprit is found, charges will be filed in addition to any discipline the school might order, the chief said.

Superintendent Will Folger said the incident is being taken seriously.

“There are ramifications,” Folger said. “It disrupted the educational process for the afternoon whether it was a prank or real.”

The incident and lockdown was similar to an incident on Friday when a threatening message was found written in a second-floor bathroom stall at Avon Lake High School.

A 14-year-old girl has been suspended for 10 days and may face expulsion and criminal charges for allegedly writing the message, which claimed the girl had a gun in the school and “threatened everybody,” said Avon Lake Superintendent Bob Scott.
