EMH employee recognized for service

Lois Koehler, director of volunteer services with EMH Regional Healthcare System, received the hospital’s 2009 Chauncey B. Smythe Award Oct. 22.

The Chauncey B. Smythe Award is given each year to an EMH employee who has made a significant positive impact upon the community. The award is named for the late Smythe, who served as president of the board for Elyria Memorial Hospital from 1952 until 1979, and was known for his generosity of spirit and constant desire to make EMH the best hospital it could be.

Koehler has also been involved with Easter Seals for nearly a decade, currently serving on its board of directors. She has also held the positions of both president and vice president.

During her tenure, Koehler has participated in key fundraising events such as “Walk with Me,” the annual golf outing sponsored by Invacare and the Easter Seals Auction.

A check for $1,000 was presented to Koehler. The money will be added to the funds used by Easter Seals Northern Ohio to provide local services.

BBQ raises money for historical society

More than 200 people attended the Lorain County Historical Society annual BBQ and silent auction.

The fundraiser featured an all-you-can-eat menu by Big Dog Catering, a silent auction and a live auction. Music was provided by Bryan Bird, said Bill Bird, executive director of the historical society. New to the event this year was a live auction, conducted by Jim Vandemark.

Held at Jack Matia Honda on Oct. 10, the event was sponsored by FirstMerit Bank, Jack Matia Honda and Vandemark Jewelers.

Temple donates 100 bags of food

The High Holidays are a time when Jewish congregations throughout Northeast Ohio gather food donations for various Food Banks.

Elyria’s Temple B’nai Abraham, under the leadership of Rabbi Lauren Werber, Temple President Jay Schmitt and board member Denny Foger, asked members to donate at least one shopping bag full of goods to provide for those in need. In two weeks, the congregation of about 55 families filled almost 100 bags, which were donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Historical association seeks members

The Elyria Historical Association, an affiliate group of The Lorain County Historical Society, is seeking people to preserve the history of Elyria.

Membership to EHA is $5 with an LCHS membership. If you are interested in becoming a member, call (440) 322-3341.

LCHS membership fees are $15 for students, $25 per adult, $35 for a family, $60 for sustaining memberships, $125 for patron membership, $250 for heritage memberships and $2,000 for endowed life memberships.

Currently, EHA is accepting yearbook donations at The Lorain County Historical Society, 509 Washington Ave., Elyria. The office is in the basement of The Hickories Museum and is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday. Various yearbooks from Elyria Catholic, Elyria West, Open Door Christian and First Baptist Christian High School are also needed.

These books will be available for reference and may be borrowed for display during class reunions.

Enjoy fall colors at Cascade Park

The Friends of Cascade Park is hosting its 27th annual Fall Color Walk at 2 p.m. today.

The one-mile walk will start at the Nature Center at the site of the old swimming pool in Cascade Park.

Walkers should wear good traction footwear and bring a walking stick because some parts of the trail could be slippery.

The walk is free and will be guided by a member of the Friends group, a civic citizens’ organization devoted to promoting greater public use and appreciation of Cascade Park.

Trick or treat at Midway Mall

Midway Mall will offer trick-or-treating 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Retailers will hand out candy and treats for children. Treats for the adults can also be found at the Midway Mall management table.

Play in Halloween softball tournament

There will be a one-day Halloween softball tournament at West Park fields off of Lowell Street in Elyria on Saturday. Entry fee is $150, with $25 from each entry going to the winning team. The tournament will be a one-pitch, with a four-homerun limit and one-up rules in place.

KSU offers MBA information session

Representatives from Kent State University will be at an information session on the MBA degree from KSU through Lorain County Community College’s University Partnership 6 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2 in Room 122 of the University Center.

The information session is free, but registration is necessary.

Western Heights reunion Nov. 4

The 9th annual Western Heights Reunion of Elyria will be 1 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Magyar United Church of Christ, 6119 West River Road S.

Co-chairmen Julius Pondy, former Navy flyer, and John V. Bara, former state representative, are organizing the event.

Light refreshments will be served before an open session to share memories of “old Western Heights.” All former residents and their relatives or friends of the Western Heights neighborhood are welcome to attend.

Find gifts at Holiday Happenings

Shoppers can find a variety of gift-giving ideas from direct sale companies and area crafters at the Holiday Happenings under Santa’s roof bonanza 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 7 at 34869 Lorain Road, North Ridgeville.

There will be a Chinese raffle and baked goods for sale. Table space is still available.

YWCA event features Secretary of State Brunner

The Elyria YWCA’s 96th annual meeting and dinner will be devoted to women in politics.

On Tuesday, join keynote speaker Jennifer Brunner and others at the Elyria Holiday Inn. Brunner, Ohio’s secretary of state, has a bachelor’s degree from Miami University and a juris doctorate from Capital Law School. She previously served as a Franklin County Common Pleas judge.

Also speaking at the event will be Anne Hill, Gov. Ted Strickland’s representative in northern Ohio. The theme for the evening is “Let’s Get Political.”

Bar hosts Not-Forgtten Box fundraiser

Collections for the Not-Forgotten Box, the holiday fundraiser sponsored by the Salvation Army and Chronicle-Telegram, have begun.

The TLC Bar, 333 Clark St., is sponsoring a spaghetti-and-meatballs lunch 2 to 6 p.m. Nov. 14, with proceeds to benefit the toy collection campaign.

Lunch will include salad and garlic bread for $7 per person. Tickets must be purchased at the TLC Bar by Nov. 7.

A box has also been placed out front for toy donations.

Military notes

Air Force Airman Nicholas W. Anderson graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Anderson completed an intensive eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills. After completing basic training, he earned four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

He is the son of William Anderson of Broadview Heights and Sheila Marszal of Elyria. Anderson is a 2009 graduate of Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School, Broadview Heights.

Regina G. Schuster of Elyria graduated Oct. 9 from Air Force basic training in San Antonio, Texas, as an Airman E-3. She is currently in Mississippi attending Tech-School.

Following Tech-School, Schuster will go into computer communications. Her permanent duty station will be assigned in January.

Schuster is a 1999 graduate of Oberlin High School. She is the daughter of Irene Schuster of Elyria and Timothy Schuster of Yuma, Ariz.

Army Reserve Pvt. Chris Merrell has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

During the nine weeks of training, Merrell received instruction in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.

Merrell is the son of Michelle Merrell of Elyria.
