LORAIN — Southview’s upset bid was lost in 60 seconds Saturday night at George Daniel Field.

Favored Warren JFK (7-2) scored twice in a span of one minute in the fourth quarter to propel the Eagles out of danger and the Saints to a 32-7 defeat.

The Saints (2-7) had stunned JFK by inserting Ricky Earl at quarterback and driving for a third-quarter touchdown to get back in the game, down just 13-7. Southview’s defense was playing well and with Earl’s quick-score ability, it appeared the Saints might just pull off an improbable win.

“We played 41 minutes of football,” Saints coach Todd Auvil said. “Problem is, we haven’t been able to get over the hump. It’s because of our tradition (of losing). We don’t have anything to fall back on. When bad things happen, they just snowball.”

After stopping JFK on successive possessions but unable to get anything going themselves, the Saints were forced to punt from their own 36-yard line with 11:08 to play in the game. On third-and-2 from its own 44, JFK’s quarterback lofted a pass to a wide-open Mark Ringold at about the Southview 35. Ringold outraced the Saints defense to the end zone with 9:47 left to put the Eagles in front, 19-7.

Exactly a minute later, Ringold picked off an Earl pass and darted in to the end zone to put the game out of reach at 25-7. JFK added a final score with just under six minutes to play.

“Last year we had Ricky at quarterback,” Auvil said. “He’s an athlete. He did a great job. We started Josh Hescox and he did what we wanted him to do but knew we had to do something to try to get a spark.”

Earl’s 47-yard scramble set up the Saints’ touchdown, a 7-yard run by durable Aaron Serrano in the third quarter. With Serrano and Avery Ware and the entire Saints defense in general, Southview appeared to be back in the game.

“The interception helped,” JFK coach Tony Napolet said. “The long pass helped. It seemed like we scored too easily. The 13-play drive and another scoring drive, but the kids kind of took the rest of the half off. Give (Southview) a lot of credit. They got back in it and it was a ballgame for a bit.”

Earl led Southview’s offense with 84 yards — 80 coming after intermission. The Saints had only two first downs in the first half — one by penalty — and had just 14 yards in the first half. Southview did not complete a pass and had three intercepted. Meanwhile, JFK scored on its first two possessions of the game and ran and passed the ball effectively.

PLAYOFF PICTURE: Warren JFK took a step toward qualifying for a spot in the postseason in Division VI, Region 21. JFK was sixth in the division and a win over Division II Southview should earn it some valuable points. The Eagles wind up the year against 8-1 Warren Howland, its biggest rival and also a Division II school.
