AVON LAKE — Officials from the Avon Lake school district say now is the perfect time to finally begin adding new classrooms to handle the city’s burgeoning growth.

That the district is quickly running out of room is not up for debate. Classes have been held in modular units outside some of the schools for the past few years to accommodate the influx of students each year.

Opening day enrollment for the district was 3,836 this year, an increase of 113 students over last year’s opening day enrollment figures and 443 more than in 2004.

The number is expected to reach 4,591 students in eight years, according to figures provided by Citizens for Avon Lake Schools on its Web site, www.whatanopportunity.org.

“We need the classrooms and now seems like a perfect time to do it,” Superintendent Robert Scott said.

The time is right, he said, because the district has been offered between $3 million and $7 million in no- or low-interest loans backed by federal stimulus money for its building projects, but it will only receive the bonds if its issues pass. Rates from construction companies also are an estimated 10 to 12 percent lower due to the poor economy, according to the campaign committee.
