WAKEMAN TWP. — Two Huron County women were LifeFlighted from the scene of a car-semi accident about 11:30 this morning in Wakeman Township.

The women were the driver and passenger of a eastbound Honda Accord that drifted left of center on state Route 20 just east of Wakeman and struck the semi, which was westbound, according to Sgt. James Faunda of the State Highway Patrol. The semi attempted to take evasive action, but the car hit the side of the trailer, sustaining severe damage.

The women were flown to St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo. The driver had life-threatening injuries and the passenger had severe but non-life-threatening injuries, Faunda said. The driver of the semi, a man from Cuyahoga County, refused treatment.

Wakeman Fire Chief Jim Tansey said firefighters used the Jaws of Life to remove the women from the car.

Route 20 was shut down for at least an hour, and traffic was backed up after that.

The accident remains under investigation.

Wakeman police also assisted at the scene.
