Browns GM George Kokinis fired; Lerner says he’s committed to Mangini
BEREA — Browns general manager George Kokinis is out after eight games, according to multiple reports.
The Web site profootballtalk.com reported that Kokinis was escorted out of the building Monday.
Kokinis’ role within the organization was never clear. He was hired after coach Eric Mangini and seemed to report to the coach, which is an unusual setup among NFL teams. Kokinis has talked to the media rarely and has stayed in the background. He watched the 30-6 loss to the Bears from the second row of the press box Sunday.
The Browns didn’t immediately confirm or deny the story.
Earlier in the day, after another lopsided loss, Browns owner Randy Lerner remained committed to coach Eric Mangini.
Mangini remained committed to his plan to turn around the team, despite a 30-6 loss Sunday in Chicago and a 1-7 record at the bye week.
“I’ve been a part of a lot of different ways of getting to the same goal, but the consistent approach is important,” he said Monday.
He said he wouldn’t fire or demote first-year offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and might stick with quarterback Derek Anderson, who’s had a terrible four-game stretch. Mangini said he’d use the bye week to evaluate whether to start Anderson or Brady Quinn on Nov. 16 against Baltimore.
Lerner said in an e-mail that he’s not considering a coaching change, but he does want to add a person who can “provide leadership and clarity regarding decisions and direction.”
He doesn’t have a timetable on adding that person to the front office but feels a “strong football person will be crucial” to moving the organization forward.
Lerner said he felt “sick” after watching the loss to the Bears from the tunnel outside the locker room at Soldier Field. Mangini has the vast majority of power on the football side of the organization, so adding someone would be cutting into his authority.
