And then there were two.

Avon Lake and North Ridgeville are the only area teams who will be playing football this weekend, having been assured playoff berths Sunday afternoon when the final OHSAA Harbin computer ratings were released.

Clearview just missed, finishing tied for the final qualifying spot in Division IV, Region I4, only to lose out to Pemberville Eastwood on Level 3 points.

We kind of knew what was at stake heading into Saturday’s Oak Harbor-Sandusky St. Mary game,” Clearview coach Mike Collier said. “Friday night, a lot of things went our way, and we even traveled to watch the Oak Harbor game on Saturday. But we did what we could.”

As for the area qualifiers, not only are both schools from Lorain County, but both were champions of their respective conferences, both are in Division II, Region 6 and both will travel Friday to face Toledo-area opponents.

The Rangers (8-2), seeded eighth, play at Toledo St. Francis DeSales to take on the top-seeded Knights (9-1), while the Shoremen (7-3), seeded fifth, travel to Maumee to play the fourth-seeded Panthers (9-1).

“There will probably be a mass exodus of Lorain County football fans heading out that way (Friday),” North Ridgeville coach Jeff Riesen said.

Said Avon Lake coach Dave Dlugosz: “I’d expect to see a large Lorain County contingent going out to the Toledo area. I know our kids are excited to have the opportunity to represent Avon Lake and Lorain County in the playoffs.”

The two schools are separated by the city of Avon and both border Cuyahoga County, but they’re taking different paths to the playoffs.

North Ridgeville is making its first appearance in the postseason, despite winning the inaugural West Shore Conference championship four years ago.

“This is pretty amazing,” said Riesen, who guided Amherst to the playoffs four times prior to coming back to Ridgeville. “We’re just really excited for the players, the school and the community. It’s nice to finally have this happen after all these years. This team has worked really hard for this to happen, and I’m very proud of them.”

Avon Lake, meanwhile, will be making its 11th playoff appearance in the previous 12 years, all under Dlugosz. This is the third straight year the Shoremen have qualified and they did it this season after starting 0-2 and 1-3.

“Our kids are pretty happy to be playing in the playoffs,” Dlugosz said. “Winning the Southwestern Conference has always been our first goal because we know if we can take care of that, the playoffs will normally be there as a result. We’re fortunate to have had a successful program and to have that success continue this season.”

Ridgeville started off 5-0 before dropping a 14-13 loss to Bay in Week 6. The Rangers also lost to Rocky River, which qualified for the playoffs in Region 6 as the No. 7 seed, 23-21 in Week 9.

So as the Rangers celebrated their comeback 18-14 win over Midview on Friday, word began trickling down to the coaches and players that both Bay and Rocky River had lost, setting up a three-way tie for the WSC championship.

Then they got word that Olmsted Falls, which was ranked ahead of them in their region, had lost to North Olmsted, 14-6. Suddenly, the team could celebrate a little bit more than a conference title.

“There was definite excitement,” Riesen said. “First we win a tough game over a rival, then to find out we’re tri-champs and then to hear Olmsted Falls lost on top of all of that, it was a great feeling. It really was.”

For Avon Lake, playoffs were one of the furthest things from their minds after that 1-3 start. The Shoremen knew they would have to win their final six games to not only have a shot at an SWC title, but to also avoid what would have been the worst regular-season record under Dlugosz.

As the winning morphed into a streak, the team was slowly climbing up the Harbin rankings week after week.

“We have a veteran group of coaches, players who had been through trying times in the past, and we had streaks where we had very good games,” Dlugosz said. “We were making mental errors during those losses, like fumbles, penalties and interceptions, and they were costing us.

“We knew that if we overcame those, we’d be a pretty good team. To the kids’ credit, they worked hard at that and really put it together. This is the result of that hard work.”

Back-to-back losses to Wellington (40-35) and Buckeye (19-17) in Weeks 4 and 5 ended up proving costly for the Clippers, who still ended up winning their fourth straight Patriot Athletic Conference Stripes Division championship.

“We had an exceptional group of seniors that stuck together,” Collier said. “They wanted more, and I wanted it for them. We liked our chances going against top-seeded Galion because we weren’t a one-dimensional team. But, unfortunately, it didn’t go our way.”

Elyria Catholic, which had been projected to reach the Division IV state championship game by some statewide services in the preseason, went 7-3 and finished ninth in Region 14. A 15-13 loss to Trinity in Week 9 may have been more costly than the other two EC losses.

Olmsted Falls (6-4) wound up ninth in Division II, Region 6. The Bulldogs had two one-point losses, 3-2 to Padua in Week 1 and 17-16 to Amherst in Week 9.
