State probing tax-exempt status for Crushers stadium
The Ohio Department of Taxation is looking into whether Avon city officials misled them in applying for and receiving tax-exempt status for the land that the Lake Erie Crushers’ All Pro Freight Stadium sits on.
The city received tax-exempt status in January after the state was told the property was being used for a public recreation center, according to Mike McKinney from the Ohio Department of Taxation.
Ground was broken in September on the 67,000-square-foot French Creek Family YMCA next to the stadium.
Avon Mayor Jim Smith said he believes the city should receive a tax break on the stadium because other minor league teams throughout the state do. But, he said, if the city is in the wrong it will pay property taxes on the land.
