Prosecutors: Judge’s secretary knew, aided son with drug ring
ELYRIA — Prosecutors on Monday released more details about the case of an alleged drug distribution case that led to criminal charges against a county judge’s secretary.
Assistant Prosecutor Peter Gauthier filed details that provide the framework of the case prosecutors will present when the case goes to trial, such as the allegation that Angel L. Bauzo, son of Olga Velez, former secretary for county Family Court Judge Debra Boros, operated a drug trafficking organization and arranged for the delivery of six separate shipments of marijuana into Lorain County between July 9 and Sept. 2, 2008.
Velez, who retired from her job with Boros just before her indictment in October 2008, faces complicity in money laundering and drug trafficking charges as well as falsification charges.
In Monday’s document, prosecutors allege that Velez “had knowledge of the organization and held money from drug sales” for her son.
Prosecutors also said that on July 9, 2008, Bauzo called Velez to arrange to visit her Sheffield home and remove $10,000 cash from a safe she kept for him, adding that he would put $20,000 into the safe the next day.
Prosecutors say the deposit was to be made after Bauzo paid for and received a delivery of marijuana.
Prosecutors say Bauzo received the shipments of marijuana from Donald C. Moore Jr. and brought them to Avon and Elyria for distribution.
Bauzo allegedly ran the drug ring out of his Avon home, where he lived with his girlfriend, Jennifer Bryner, and children.
Prosecutors allege that while Bauzo was watching the children during the day when Bryner was at work, he was on the phone with alleged associates discussing details of the drug trafficking.
Velez worked with Boros for 21 years, beginning at the county prosecutor’s office, then becoming Boros’ secretary when Boros became a judge.
