Democrats Frank Janik and Terry Traster were separated by less than half a percent, according to unofficial board of elections numbers Tuesday. Janik, 44, an attorney, tallied 2,134 votes to the 2,113 votes for Traster, 53, a carpenter and construction manager for the Amherst Historical Society. Janik garnered 25.70 percent of the vote to Traster’s 25.45 percent. State law makes recounts automatic for any race in which candidate vote totals are within a half-percent of each other.
Republican Phil Van Treuren, 32, a designer of websites for Emerge, Inc., was the top vote-getter in the four-way race, which saw incumbent Republican Dennis Walters, 63, loses his bid for re-election. Trueren tallied 2,285 votes while Walters, a longtime Firelands Local Schools administrator, came in fourth with 1,771 votes.
