Register for holiday assistance

Those who missed the holiday assistance signup can still register.

The Elyria Salvation Army has added a make-up day for residents to submit applications 9 a.m. to noon Friday at the agency at 716 Broad St.

Elyria residents who wish to receive assistance should bring a photo ID, proof of residency, such as a utility bill, income verification and proof of children in household, such as a medical card, Social Security card or school record.

Get rid of the antiques gathering dust in your attic

The Great Treasure Hunt, a company that appraises and buys collectibles, will be in Elyria Tuesday through Saturday for a buy show.

The Great Treasure Hunt will be at the Country Inns & Suites at 645 Griswold Road from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. In-demand items include old toys, business signs, coins, musical instruments, comic books and autographs.

VFW to hold card party

The VFW Post 1079 Ladies Auxiliary will host a card party 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at the post at 500 South Abbe Road.

There will be door and table prizes, and food. This event is open to the public.

Elyria Catholic to host holiday bazaar

More than 130 vendors will showcase their wares at Elyria Catholic’s Holiday Craft Bazaar.

Sponsored by the band parents, this year’s event is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Elyria Catholic.

Class teaches women to use power tools

Lowe’s is offering a class in power tools for women.

Dewalt, a manufacturer of industrial power tools, is supplying the teacher, and Lowe’s of Elyria is providing the space, said Ron Crum, Lowe’s commercial sales specialist.

“Each woman is actually going to touch the tools and get some real hands-on experience,” Crum said. “When they finish, they should be able to apply what they learned to a number of home do-it-yourself projects.”

The hands-on seminar designed is at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Nov. 18 at Lowe’s in Elyria, at 646 Midway Blvd. Classes are limited to 25 per class. Register by calling (440) 324-5004.

Cafe hosts fundraiser for drowning victim’s family

The Harvest Cafe in Grafton is holding a fundraiser for the family of 13-year-old Logan Spradlin of Elyria.

From 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 24, the restaurant will donate a portion of each bill to the family’s memorial fund at FirstMerit Bank. In addition, gift baskets will be for sale, with a percentage of the proceeds going to the fund.

Logan died after falling into Black River near the East Falls Riverwalk shortly after 2 p.m. Oct. 10 after climbing over the guardrail of an observation deck.

Lil Pioneers basketball starts in December

The Elyria High Boys’ Basketball team will have its Lil Pioneers start-ups on Dec. 5.

Lil Pioneers games are 9 to 11 a.m. Saturdays at Elyria City Schools. Lil Pioneers is for anyone in grades three, four, five and six.

There will three weeks of a mini-camp and seven weeks of games. Elyria High coaching staff and players will coach.

Military news

Air Force Airman Mark Gates and Air Force Airman First Class Rachel Pavlich recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

Gates, a 2008 graduate of Strongsville High School, is the son of Ed Gates of Strongsville and Renee Hill of Elyria. Pavlich is the daughter of Michele Pavlich of Florida and the granddaughter of Virginia MacCombs of Elyria.

Both completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. They also earned four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

In addition, Army National Guard Pfc. Richard R. Novotny graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla.

Novotny, a 2002 graduate of Elyria High School, is the son of Denise and Ronald Novotny of Elyria.
