LCCC women split first two games
The Lorain County Community College women’s basketball team opened its season with a split of two games at Mercyhurst North East in a Coaches for Cancer tournament.
On Saturday, the Commodores trailed Mercyhurst 23-17 at halftime before losing 72-49.
Christa Wodarczyk, a Columbia grad, led the Commodores with 11 points, while Octavia Snipes (Southview) added eight and Megan Snow (Midview) had seven.
Avon High graduate Julia Monteleone suffered a back injury late in the first half, which hurt LCCC’s chances.

Wodarczyk led the way again, this time getting 23 points and 12 rebounds for the first double-double of her career.
Snipes added 15 points, while Snow and Jessica Harvey had 13 each, including three 3-pointers.
CSU to honor three athletes
Three former Cleveland State athletes will be inducted into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame on Jan. 9.
Brian Lamers (swimming, 1993-96), Heidi Marshall (basketball and softball, 1990-94) and Amy Ritzman (cross country/track, 1991-95) comprise the 35th class of inductees.
Lammers, a native of Berea, was a three-time Midwestern Collegiate Conference champion in the 100-meter breaststroke, qualifying to the NCAA championships as a senior.
Marshall, a Revere grad, started 128 of the 130 softball games she played in, batting .288 with 18 doubles, 45 runs scored, 45 RBIs and 27 stolen bases.
In basketball, she ranks 21st in school history with 997 career points.
She’s fifth all-time in free throw percentage (.763) and seventh in 3-point percentage (.343).
Ritzman, from Fremont Ross, was the top CSU finisher in all 26 cross country races she competed in, and took fifth in the North Star Conference tournament in 1991 to help the Vikings win the team title.
She is the only CSU runner to earn cross country athlete of the year honors four times and closed out her career by winning the league title and being named Mid-Continent Female Runner of the Year.
Oberlin volleyball players honored
Amanda Wysk and Rita Kaplon were named to the second team All-North Coast Athletic Conference and the NCAC honorable mention list, respectively, in volleyball.
Wysk and Kaplon led the Yeowomen to a school-record seven NCAC wins (7-9), good enough for fifth place, and a school record-tying 15 wins overall (15-16).
Wysk, a junior from Big Bend, Wis., was third in the NCAC with 3.25 kills per game and was second with .36 service aces per game. Kaplon, a senior from Yellow Springs, is the school’s all-time leader in assists with 2,850 in her four-year career.
