COLUMBUS — Ohio has become the first state to adopt a procedure for lethal injections that uses one drug, a method never before tried on U.S. inmates.

The state filed papers Friday in U.S. District Court saying it has decided to switch from a three-drug cocktail to a single injection of thiopental sodium into a vein. A muscle injection will be available as a backup.

The decision comes two months after an Ohio death row inmate walked away from an unsuccessful execution and subsequent executions were put on hold.

Several states have faced similar challenges, but Ohio is the first to drop the three-drug approach in favor of one dose. The Death Penalty Information Center says it’s never been attempted on humans.

  1. The result of the injection of one drug instead of three may be no different that one bullet, one rope or one flick of and electrical switch. The result is the same, which is the disrespect of the most severe kind possible for the life of a human being. Until we all give due respect for the dignity of all human life, our instincts for revenge and vengence will dominate over all other human emotions that hinder our progression upward in values and principles that we hold in high esteem.

  2. Dennis,

You use the words revenge and vengeance as if mobs of people are surrounding the condemned with pitchforks while foaming at the mouth. Capital punishment is about justice.

I do believe in mercy and this is why we have a judge and jury to decide when it is warranted. However, I also believe that there are some crimes so heinous in nature and unacceptable by society that it deserves the death penalty.

I agree that the death penalty is not a deterrent to murder, but what really is? People who commit murder are not in the right state of mind and nothing much will influence their decision.

Yea, killers deserve more respect, tell that to the Fort Hood victims
