ELYRIA — County commissioners on Thursday approved a 10-year property tax abatement for an Avon company that plans to nearly double the size of its facility and hire new workers.
Chris Carroll, president of Carroll Manufacturing and Sales, said the company will expand its approximately 70,000-square-foot plant on Avon Commerce Parkway by another 63,500 square feet.
Another 10 workers will join the current staff of 61 full-time workers and 10 part-timers.

The company manufactures plastics that are used to cook food in, infusing it with flavor, Carroll said. The addition will take the company from being a plastics company to being a food service company, he said.
The company moved to Avon from Westlake about four years ago.
The expansion will cost between $3.8 million and $5.3 million, according to paperwork presented to the commissioners before they voted to approve the abatement, which will be for 75 percent for the first year.
The abatement will decrease by 5 percent each year and in its 10th year will cut the company’s property taxes by 50 percent.
Avon Mayor Jim Smith said he was pleased to see Carroll expanding.
“It’s good for Lorain County to diversify from the automotive and steel industries, (whose decline) crushed us,” Smith said.
Carroll said the expansion is expected to be completed by early next year.
