ELYRIA — Let the bidding begin.

A portion of Adam Shields’ prized “Star Wars” collection has been photographed and placed on eBay for buyers to haggle over on the virtual auction site. Click here to bid or check out the auctions.

Shields, 36, donated the collection of hundreds of figurines, battleships and space vehicles to The Chronicle-Telegram in 2008 in hopes of seeing each toy go to a deserving child recipient of the Not-Forgotten Box. Click here to read more about Shields and his donation.

However, organizers of the annual toy drive are selling the items online in hopes of raising more money to buy toys that will be distributed by the Elyria Salvation Army. This is the first time the Chronicle has elected to sell donated toys, but Shields permitted it because of his donation’s value as collectibles.

Shields has stockpiled Star Wars figurines and memorabilia since childhood after his parents took him when he was 7 to see the first movie.

Some of his pieces are from the late 1970s. Others are newer, with voice boxes and attachments, made around the time “Star Wars: Episode 1 — The Phantom Menace” came out in 1999.

Now that the first 35 items have been listed at auction, with each item starting with a $0.99 opening bid, The Chronicle just requires one thing of those who want to help the less fortunate this year: bid often and bid high. All the proceeds will be used to buy toys for the Not-Forgotten Box.

More items will be added to eBay in the next week or so, so keep checking — particularly if someone’s Christmas list includes some really cool “Star Wars” stuff.
