Crushers honored

The Lake Erie Crushers were given the Community Awareness, Recognition, Education and Service award from the Murray Ridge Center to honor the team’s efforts to help developmentally disabled Lorain County residents.

The Crushers hired Murray Ridge Center members to work in janitorial services, using as many as six per game. More than 50 members worked for the Crushers this past season, when the team won the Frontier League title in its inaugural season.

Murray Ridge Center credited the Crushers organization for its patience and support of the janitorial workers. When the Crushers made the playoffs, the team provided tickets for both members and staff.

Leaves, leaves, go away

Avon Lake’s collection of leaves raked to the treelawn or curb began Nov. 10. Leaf collection runs until Jan. 1, weather permitting.

Leaves should not be pushed out into the street, as piles impede traffic and leaves can clog storm drains and contaminate the water that runs out of storm drains. Leaves and branches need to be separated. After Jan. 1, leaves need to be bagged or put in containers and put out on your regular trash day.

Depending on the weather and how long it takes crews to pick up the leaves, it takes two to three weeks for crews to complete a full route around the city. For daily updates on where leaf collection is happening, go to www.avonlake.org.

Get crafty
