The unemployment rates for Lorain County, as well as the cities of Lorain and Elyria, all increased in October, according to figures released this morning by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Lorain County unemployment was 10.5 percent in October, up from 9.1 percent in September. The county’s unemployment rate in October 2008 was 6.2 percent.

Unemployment in Elyria was 10.5 percent in October, up from 9.5 percent in September. The city’s unemployment rate in October 2008 was 6.5 percent.

Unemployment in Lorain was 12.8 percent in October, up from 11.1 percent in September. The city’s unemployment rate in October 2008 was 7.4 percent.

The state of Ohio’s unemployment rate, announced last week, was 10.5 percent in October, up from 10.1 percent in September. Ohio’s nonfarm wage and salary employment increased 1,400 over the month, from 5,097,000 in September to 5,098,400 in October.

“Ohio’s labor market continued to show weakness in October,” ODJFS Director Douglas Lumpkin said. “The unemployment rate increased to 10.5 percent as more Ohioans were unemployed and seeking work while the number of goods-producing and service providing jobs increased slightly.”

The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in October was 618,000, up from 594,000 in September. The number of unemployed has increased by 209,000 in the past 12 months from 409,000. The October unemployment rate for Ohio was up from 6.9 percent in October 2008.

The U.S. unemployment rate for October was 10.2 percent, up from 9.8 percent in September.
