ELYRIA - The city of Elyria Health District has 6,565 additional doses of H1N1 flu vaccine and 900 doses of seasonal flu vaccine it plans to distribute in five additional flu clinics.

Already, the city health district has distributed some 5,400 doses of H1NI, according to Environmental Health Director Dave Oakes.

The H1N1 vaccine is free and is available to target groups including pregnant women, persons who live with or care for infants under 6 months, health care workers and emergency services who provide direct patient care; young people 6 months to 24 years old and people ages 25 to 64 with chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems.

Examples of persons with chronic illnesses needing the vaccine are those with chronic asthma or bronchitis, cancer, multiple sclerosis or muscular dystrophy.

Those 65 and older are not among the target groups because that population has been relatively free of H1NI.

The target population for seasonal flu vaccine includes the population over 65 years old, as well as those in the H1N1 initial target group.

Seasonal flu vaccines are free to those on Medicare and Medicaid and cost $15 for the rest of the population.

The flu clinics are not limited to Elyria residents, Oakes said.
