ELYRIA — Elyria is not often seen as a shopping mecca, but it drew shoppers from well beyond its boundaries on Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year.
With stores like Best Buy, Target and Macy’s all in close proximity, Elyria was where 22-year-old Cari Connley of New Riegel decided to shop.
“We heard this was the place to be,” said the Seneca County resident as she exited Best Buy with several newly purchased electronics in her hand. She came to both Christmas shop and shop for herself.
She hit Best Buy for a heavily discounted computer printer and digital camera.
Target was the destination for Satara Brown, 44, because it offered a 31-inch LCD high-definition television.
Her big purchases will be shipped back to Brown’s home in Kansas City, Mo.
“It was worth it to get up this early,” she said. “It’s still cheaper than if I would have bought it not on sale. This is a $479 television I got for $246.”
Brown was in town visiting her mother in Lorain for the holiday.
Combining travel and shopping is likely to take place all over the state as AAA reports an estimated 1.5 million people will travel 50 miles or more away from home this weekend, up
3 percent from 2008.
