Event to benefit new EMH program
The EMH Regional Medical Center Women’s Auxiliary Board Cordially is hosting its 47th annual Benefit Ball at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Avon Oaks Country Club, 32300 Detroit Road, Avon.
The black-tie-optional event provides financial support to the recently created Close Observation Care Program at EMH Regional Medical Center. This program assists patients requiring close observation and unique individualized care.
The night will includes an hors d’oeuvres and wine tasting hour at 6:30 p.m., with dinner at 7:30 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by “Swing City” and there will be a Close Observation Care Program benefit raffle.

The Cornerstone Church is holding a cookie walk 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church at 2949 West River Road.
The event is free, but cookies are $4 for a dozen and $7 for two dozen. For information, call (440) 324-1202.
Crestwood food drive nets 1,124 pounds
Fourth- and fifth-grade student council members at Crestwood Elementary held a food drive Nov. 16-20 and collected hundreds of pounds of food for the Salvation Army, enough to feed 50 Elyria families, according to the organization.
The students began with a goal of 700 food items and collected 1,124 - the most ever at a Crestwood food drive.
Crestwood Student Council Committee leader Doug Taylor, a fifth-grader, headed up the effort, along with student council members Brooke Tweady, Zachary Opperman and James Gargaz.
The Student Council adviser is fifth-grade teacher Kathy Schmidt.
EC students earn scholarships
Elyria Catholic High School awarded the Scott M. Holland Scholarship to Cody Reaser and Kristin Concheck during the Junior Recognition ceremony earlier this month.
The scholarship is awarded each year to Elyria Catholic juniors to be used for their senior year. It was presented by three of Holland’s former classmates, Chas Branz, Neil Sullinger and Bobbi Lelito, all 2002 graduates.
Priest installed at St. Mary
The Rev. Charles Diedrick at St. Mary Church was officially installed as the 15th pastor of the St. Mary Parish by Bishop Anthony Pevec during a recent Mass.
Diedrick, known as Father Charlie, was sent to oversee St. Mary in August 2007 but was not a stranger to the church. His great-grandparents were married at St. Mary’s parish and their son - Diedrick’s grandfather - was the 12th child baptized at St. Mary’s.
One of seven children, Diedrick grew up on a farm in Elyria. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School, then enrolled in Borromeo Seminary High School and College in Wickliffe. Diedrick did his postgraduate studies at the North American College in Rome and was ordained in 1978.
Diedrick has served with parishes including St Paul’s in Akron, Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Wickliffe and St. Barnabus in Northfield. He also served at St Mary 1988 to 1993.
Legion hosts cookie exchange
The annual American Legion Auxiliary cookie exchange is 7 p.m. Dec. 8. The ladies of the Auxiliary Unit 12 will meet in the men’s lounge at the post, 393 Ohio St. Bring 18 cookies for the exchange.
New Life Hospice seeks volunteers
New Life Hospice needs volunteers to give back rubs and foot massages, cook meals, play games, do household chores or just listen. Volunteers undergo extensive training to prepare them to work with terminally ill patients and their families.
The next patient care orientation is 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 19-20. For information and an application, call Christina Wade, volunteer services coordinator, at (440) 934-1458.
Precious Pups honors fair winners
The Elyria Precious Pups 4-H Club held an awards banquet earlier this month to honor the accomplishments of members at the Lorain County Fair.
4-H members who were winners with their dogs at the Lorain County Fair winners are Megan Dale, Jessica Robenolt, Sam Georgevich, Marissa Scheidler, Heather Kinser and Katie Holmes.Winners for outstanding dog projects were Dale and Robenolt. Dale also won for Outstanding Non-Dog Animal Project, the leadership award and the senior Hall of Fame. Georgevich won for Outstanding Agriculture Products Still Life Project and was junior winner of the Hall of Fame. Robenolt won for Outstanding Consumer Science Project.

Foundation works to strike out hunger
The Jake Nolan Foundation is holding a “Strike Out Hunger Bowl” noon to 3 p.m. Dec. 6 at Black River Lanes, 613 Oberlin-Elyria Road. Tickets are $15 and include two games, shoe rental, hot dog and chips.
Attendees should bring a nonperishable food donation and/or a “bottle of cheer” for the barrel of fun raffle. You do not have to bowl to participate in the raffles and auctions, but if you do bowl, you must finish by 3:30 p.m. to qualify for bowling prizes. Prizes will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place bowlers.
All proceeds will be donated to local food banks in Nolan’s memory.

LNB holiday event open to the public
The Ely Square office of Lorain National Bank will host a holiday celebration 4:45 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday in conjunction with the 20th annual Downtown Elyria Festival of Lights.
The celebration is open to the public and includes activities for the entire family. The Ely Square office is at 124 Middle Ave.
A bell choir will perform holiday music and Mrs. Claus will have a storytelling session. There will also be a Santa’s workshop with elves. Refreshment will be served. Santa Claus will be on the Square 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
