Avon brother and sister perform with Cleveland’s Singing Angels
AVON — An Avon brother and sister will be making the holidays merry for many with their gift of music.
Carina Chavez, 15, and her brother, Ramon, are part of the Cleveland-based Singing Angels. Carina will be part of the group performing at 3 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Palace Theatre in Lorain. She’ll be performing a solo of “We Need a Little Christmas” in the show. She was also part of the Singing Angels performing at Winterfest in downtown Cleveland last week, and performed her solo at the tree-lighting ceremony at Legacy Village in Lyndhurst.
Ramon, who is part of the reserve chorus, will be singing in the Caroling Crusade at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 13 at Avon Oaks, 37800 French Creek Drive, Avon, and at 3:45 p.m. at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, 32900 Detroit Road, Avon.
The Singing Angels is a 45-year-old organization that brings children of diverse backgrounds together to develop their musical skills. The group has performed in 31 countries including China, Russia, Germany, Italy and Taiwan. It has also performed with stars including Bob Hope, Wayne Newton and Celine Dion. The organization performs in about 100 shows per year, including charitable benefits.
Carina, a freshman at Avon High School, joined Singing Angels a year ago. She sings first soprano.
“I saw the Web site and read that auditions were coming up,” she said.
Carina, who had been a part of school choirs in the past, loves to sing, dance and perform. Joining the Singing Angels, she said, has been a great education.
“You learn a lot about being on stage, and developing your singing skills,” she said. “We do so many kinds of music — barbershop, choral music, show tunes. It’s not boring!”
She admits she’s a little nervous about her Palace solo, but says she’ll be all right once she gets on stage.
While Carina loves performing, she’s not sure if she’ll make music a career. Right now, she just enjoys it and may get involved in events at Avon High School.
“I like just being up there on stage, doing something I really like to do,” she said. “I feed on the energy from the audience.”
