Amherst man in critical condition after crash

FLORENCE TWP. — Two Lorain County men were injured, one critically, in an Erie County crash, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Driver Michael Collett, 27, of Vermilion, and passenger Andrew Vandersommen, 28, of Amherst, were airlifted to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

Vandersommen was in critical condition Saturday night, according to the hospital. Collett was released Saturday, according to the Highway Patrol.

Collett was driving his 2001 Hyundai westbound on state Route 113 around 1:30 a.m. Saturday when he failed to negotiate a curve, the Highway Patrol said. The car went off the right side of the road and struck a mailbox, two signs and a large metal box. The car rolled and came to rest on its side.

Charges are pending, according to the Highway Patrol.
