SHEFFIELD — An Amherst man is in critical condition this morning after the car he was riding in crashed on Interstate 90 Sunday afternoon, bringing eastbound traffic to a halt for more than an hour.

Derrick Doan, 24, was a front seat passenger in the 1994 Honda driven by 21-year-old Ryan Katitus of Lorain when the car veered off the road.

The men had to be cut from the car, said Sheffield Police Chief Larry Bliss.

“Witnesses said he was driving recklessly, weaving in and out of traffic,” Bliss said, adding that Katitus may have been driving 85 to 90 mph.

Katitus went off the left side of the road just before 3 p.m. and lost control when he pulled the car back onto the freeway, Bliss said.

Katitus then drove the car off the right side of the road and along the grassy berm until it hit a culvert and flipped onto the passenger side just shy of the 149-mile marker, Bliss said.

Doan was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where a supervisor said he was in critical condition.

Katitus was taken to Avon Emergency Care Center and then to MetroHealth, where he was treated and released.

Bliss didn’t know whether the men were wearing seat belts or whether airbags were deployed. Charges are pending, Bliss said.
