Legislation passed by the Senate over the weekend will bring nearly $600,000 to a Lorain nonprofit.

El Centro de Servicios Sociales Inc. will receive $584,400 in federal funds for renovations and building improvements to improve energy efficiency and help renovate its facilities on East 31st Street in South Lorain, according to a news release from Sen. Sherrod Brown’s office. The funds were secured by Brown and Rep. Betty Sutton, the release said.

El Centro is a Hispanic/Latino nonprofit advocacy organization that provides social and educational services to the greater Lorain community.

The funds were among more than $27 million Brown’s office announced yesterday that will invest in critical programs and services across Ohio. The funds were included in the Fiscal 2010 Omnibus Appropriations Act, which combined several individual appropriations bills that had yet to be fully acted upon by Congress.

“These funds will help meet local needs while promoting economic development,” Brown said. “They will prepare Ohio for long-term economic growth and will help enrich and strengthen our communities.”

From an administration that promised transparency and NO earmarks. Hmmm … 27 million dollars of PORK (earmarks) going to Ohio! Louisiana received 300 million dollars for one vote. This money is not coming from the government it is coming from the taxpayers. This is payback for favors (votes) and is bankrupting our country.

Now congress is requesting to raise the national debt to 14 trillion dollars. We are bankrupting our country. The more they spend, the more they tax and the more they regulate business the fewer jobs there are. Regardless how much they spend they cannot create long term private sector jobs.

The only sector that is creating jobs is the government. The only employees that are seeing significant pay increases are government employees. USA Today reported that the Defense Department civilian employees earning $150,000 or more increased from 1,868 in December 2007 to 10,100 in June 2009, that’s an increase x10. In fact, government employees make $30 thousand dollars a year more that private sector employees.

As we are losing our jobs the government is hiring and giving pay increases.

It is nice to see local organizations receive taxpayer’s dollars but I don’t think we can afford it. The extreme spending and higher taxation must stop.
