Lorain’s El Centro to receive $584,400 in federal funds for renovation

Legislation passed by the Senate over the weekend will bring nearly $600,000 to a Lorain nonprofit.

El Centro de Servicios Sociales Inc. will receive $584,400 in federal funds for renovations and building improvements to improve energy efficiency and help renovate its facilities on East 31st Street in South Lorain, according to a news release from Sen. Sherrod Brown’s office. The funds were secured by Brown and Rep. Betty Sutton, the release said.

El Centro is a Hispanic/Latino nonprofit advocacy organization that provides social and educational services to the greater Lorain community.

The funds were among more than $27 million Brown’s office announced yesterday that will invest in critical programs and services across Ohio. The funds were included in the Fiscal 2010 Omnibus Appropriations Act, which combined several individual appropriations bills that had yet to be fully acted upon by Congress.

“These funds will help meet local needs while promoting economic development,” Brown said. “They will prepare Ohio for long-term economic growth and will help enrich and strengthen our communities.”
