Peacocks stealing the show today at the APL

ELYRIA — Peacocks are stealing the show today at the Friendship Animal Protective League in Elyria.

The APL’s been flooded with calls all morning — and not calls about dogs and cats, according to Cheryl Rourke at the APL.

They have 10 good candidates to take two peacocks they rescued in Lorain yesterday, one of which had been roaming the east side for nearly six months.

Of that list of 10, three are “very, very good candidates,” Rourke said.

“These are people who have been raising and training peacocks for years, they already have the knowledge of what to do with peacocks, and they’re people who have really nice farms,” Rourke said.

They’re all in Lorain County, according to Rourke, who said one was in Vermilion, another was in Grafton and she couldn’t recall the third.

Two of them teach peacocks to free-range, which means they can roam free and don’t need to be penned, Rourke said.

The peacocks are doing well this morning at the APL, Rourke said. They’re staying in the garage kennel area and are just starting to talk, she said.

The APL is beginning the process of going through the list of candidates to decide who gets the peacocks, Rourke said.
